It’s creator is making a branch. He’s apoplectic about how Oracle must want to destroy MySQL because it competes with their SQL language, but even that is probably only marketing posture. Either way, MySQL will presist; it’s just a matter of whether the best version will be a new open-source branch, or Oracle’s.

If it seems strange that Oracle would permit MySQL to be competitive, remember that IBM is one of the most profitable firms in America. When was the last time you bought anything from IBM? They’re essentially a consulting firm, now, teaching people how to technology... with a 44% profit margin!

Given that Oracle has done nothing to improve or promote it in the 3+ years since they've acquired it, my expectation is that it'll likely be killed by Oracle. No doubt it will survive in open source though likely under a different name.

I agree... I prefer MySQL over SQL Server and Oracle... May have to use PostgreSQL if Oracle kills MySQL..

If you're shopping, check out FirebirdSQL.

It's my favorite RDBMS.

Sheesh...we spend millions annually on IBM hardware and software licenses. Probably because that's what all the IBM consultants that we also pay millions recommend.

Why not migrate to MariaDB:

“I will do everything that is possible to keep MySQL alive,” says Michael (Monty) Widenius, the main developer of the well-known open source database. “I just hope it’s enough.”

Disagreeing with development decisions, Widenius himself left Sun eleven months after the purchase to start Monty Program AB, a non-profit company that develops MariaDB, a community-centered MySQL fork.

I have used MySQL for awhile.. To me a database is just a database.. I think that Open Sources Database like MySQL is just as good as Oracle or SQL Server..

While services is an ever growing part of IBM's portfolio they are still the largest server maker in the world and growing marketshare. The silicon inside of all three video game system, most of the world's routers and many cellphones, cameras, televisions etc are IBM made.

The death of IBM hardware has been greatly exaggerated.
