The Mysterious Voynich Manuscript
Credit:
Yale University ; Digital Copyright: B. E. Schaefer (LSU)

Explanation: The ancient text has no known title, no known author, and is written in no known language: what does it say and why does it have many astronomy illustrations? The mysterious book was once bought by an emperor, forgotten on a library shelf, sold for thousands of dollars, and later donated to Yale. Possibly written in the 15th century, the over 200-page volume is known most recently as the Voynich Manuscript, after its (re-)discoverer in 1912. Pictured above is an illustration from the book that appears to be somehow related to the Sun. The book labels some patches of the sky with unfamiliar constellations. The inability of modern historians of astronomy to understand the origins of these constellations is perhaps dwarfed by the inability of modern code-breakers to understand the book's text. Can the eclectic brain trust of APOD readers make any progress? If you think you can provide any insight, instead of sending us email please participate in a fresh online discussion. The book itself remains in Yale's rare book collection under catalog number "MS 408."

That looks like writing on the inside of the ring from Lord of the Rings. Could this be evidence of elves?

The sun looks sad. It must be saying something bad.

That is ancient rhyming code. It means more than is evident.

I find it interesting that there are no numbers on that chart. At least, none that I recognize. What would a chart like that be trying to convey without numbers?

Funny to consider the possibility that, some drunkard’s 15th Century musings on a cocktail napkin are the source of great scientific debate in the 21st.

It’s probably just a child’s book explaining what the big yellow thing is in the sky. (Yes, I know the likelihood of it being an “ancient child’s book.”)

Greek and Hebrew, for example, have no “numbers” per se, they use letters of the alphabet instead. So the lack of what we use to represent numbers doesn’t necessarily mean anything, we could be staring at them and not recognize them for what they are.

Hmmm. In order to verify your claim, we must compare the ancient document to a modern form of gibberish and look for similarities. Is the text of the healthcare bill available online yet?

Actually When I do my scales on bass and guitar, I do them counter-clockwise, so YOU are correct! BUT when we pass a FIFTH around the Circle, we musicians do THAT clockwise! LOL
