Hope you enjoy this blast from the past. We should work hard for the same results come '12.

One thing I'd like you to notice is that back then the 'Rats were the REDS. I wonder how and why that changed.

From what I understand the networks switched colors ever Presidential election year. The whole Red vs. Blue was due to the geographical concentrations one saw in the Bush I 2002 election. I guess the name stuck and the networks stopped switching colors.

If you go to the botton of that chart and go back to 1976 and 1972 the ‘rats are still RED.

In war games, the Red army was the bad guys representing the Soviet Union. I guess the Dems felt it was a little close to home. I also heard it’s because Blue in the color of the Labor Movement.

The color red is used in most communist countries. Even in pre Marxist Russia they were known as the Red Russians (remember, we sided with the Whites and even tried an invasion).

The Rats are communist to the core and know about the color red, so they used the well worn trick of using, saying, etc... the opposite of what they are to deflect attention.

With the media's help they switched the colors as a pshycological ploy to try to pin what red connotes with the GOP.

And the GOP, the Stupid Party, swallowed the Orwellian Newsspeak relabelling to Communist without so much as a whimper. Let’s take our damn color back, I’m a BLUE Republican !

Of course, we know red is for communism...when in fact, red is for blood...RED stands for the blood of JESUS...

You’ve made my point. When you see the evidence for yourself you realize that Beck is correct. They both seem to be in on it.

The colors used were started when color television was starting to take hold. Traditionally (but not always) CBS and NBC used blue as the party in power and red as the party out of power. There were exceptions to this rule (like 1968 when ABC used green and yellow to represent the Democrats and Republicans).

In 2000, the internet was really starting to take off and many online commentators and bloggers started referring to “Blue States” (meaning States leaning towards Gore) and “Red States” (meaning States leaning towards Bush).

The parlance of the 2000 campaign stuck and that’s why Democrats are now “Blue” and Republicans are now “Red”.

It was 76 that ABC used yellow and blue, had to look that up.

Going into a politically populist time (as I think we are), red (for red-blooded i.e. the common man) would be preferable to blue (for blue-blooded i.e. the elite) in my opinion.

The subtext of colors changes culturally all the time. Until the 1940’s, pink was the choice to dress baby boys in as it was considered a “strong” color, while girls were dressed in light blue.

Just something to think about.

It boils my blood when I see so many fellow FReepers use (nearly reflexively) the red state/blue state switcheroo colors crap. I feel like shaking them by the shoulders. Red itself is a leftist totalitarian color, the media knows this. The flag of the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, Communist China, various other Communist nations, they’re not bright blue flags. I mean, that Warren Beatty movie wasn’t called “Blues” ! We don’t say “Better blue than dead.” It’s R-E-D. We’ve already lost the psych war when we allow ourselves to get labelled that, and they snicker at us at just how stupid and gullible and naive we are.

What’s next ? They’re (media/left) already calling patriots the name of a homosexual sex act. Are we going to chirpily call ourselves “teabaggers” now, too, just because THEY labelled us that ? Look at our party chairman, an incompetent imbecile by all accounts, too scared to openly label the Democrat party as Socialist (hint to Mikey, they’re WAY past Socialist now, babe, they should be rightly labelled the CCCP (another name for the old Soviets), the Criminal Communist Crimson Party). He won’t call a spade a spade, and maybe it’s time we get leaders who will, and top of the agenda, telling the media and the Democrats what they can do with their “red” label of us.

oh, how vividly I remember the ‘blue sea’ for Reagan that night and about as important, the Republicans taking control of the Senate!

I believe at the time (the Cold War then being in full force and effect) the nets didn’t want the Dems further ID’d as “reds.” No joke.

You certainly are a fighter on the red/blue color scheme. History is on your side, as you point out. This mess all started out in 2000, when the nation as a whole was closely divided, but most individual states were lopsided. The Voter News Service (now discredited & folded) used Red to signify Republicans that year, and because of the polarization in individual states, the label stuck. It surprises me that there hasn’t been more conservative objection to it. The MSM saw an opportunity and went with it.

I don't get too excited about the "Red State"/"Blue State" issue. After all, Nancy Reagan's favorite color was red and Ronnie thought she looked fantastic in it.
