SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Apple will sell its newly unveiled tablet-style iPad starting at $499.

The iPad resembles an iPhone, but larger. Apple will sell some iPad models with data plans from AT&T, with no contract required.

Apple Inc. will have to convince consumers, many of whom already have Internet-connected phones, computers and TVs, that they'll want to pay that much for such a device, when many small, lightweight "netbooks" cost less than $400.

Wow, a giant iPod touch, and still only 64 gigs.

Fair enough. Will be 256G about this time next year.

So it’s a netbook except it’s made by Apple (which means underpowered and overpriced.)
Woohoo!

Put that in an iPhone and I'm in. I currently have a 64gig touch. It's way too small (capcity)! I can't see lugging around an iPad, but that's great for those who want to. I can see the Kindle crowd going in on this, but not me. I want iPhone size with lots of capacity or I will carry a laptop, not a 1 ghz pad. But hey, that's me.

1024x768?!
Is that a typo?
It sounds awfully... 1980’s.

That processor is 100% Apple design. It and the software that it runs are matched - optimized for each other. So I'm not sure that 1GHz, when comparing it to Intel processor speeds, is a fair comparison.

I'll have to wait and see. But from the brief demo video, it doesn't look all that sluggish.

How about a notepad sized leather folio?

That also doubles as a stand.

Just one of the killer uses (hows that for creating a new term) for the iPad is college textbooks.

DW is a Professor at a mid-sized university, and right now, today, her students can save ~50% of textbook costs by buying as eBooks, rather than on paper. With 4-5 courses per semester and $100 per course for paper books, this thing pays for itself in one year.

Within 2 years many colleges will be requiring one of these for incoming students.

No contract required. On-demand activation & cancellation, $30/mo unlimited* (or $15/250MB/mo) data. THAT is a big seller; I’ll shell out the extra $130 so I know I can get on-the-run data when it’s worth thirty bucks to do so.

(* - whatever cap “unlimited” means, like the Verizon rep I talked to Sunday who insisted “unlimited means unlimited ... you’re not really going to download more than 5GB, right?”)

I think I remember hearing a similar thing about Kindle. I’m a university student (Auburn University) and I haven’t heard any mention of this (although I’m just a student, so the admins may be thinking about this without my knowledge). We’re a pretty conservative bunch here, so not everyone buys into the whole global warming thing (which I imagine is a big selling point for “eTextbooks”).

Yeah clip that on your belt and you'll look like those nerds back in the sixties with a slide rule and a pocket protector or Stephen Jobs.

132 pixels per inch is pretty darned good resolution. Yeah, 1024x768 sounds ‘80s, but that is the minimum & widespread standard and complements this product for now.

‘60s? Heck, I was that in the ‘80s.

And yes, that little leather folio will be perpetually in-hand once the durn thing shows up.

You could just tether your Blackberry to it and access the internet that way. That would save you the $30/month.

Is Verizon going to carry it, or do you know?

LOL how much would all the A/V content add up to in a month? I hope ma-Bell is working on her infrastructure.

As an existing iPhone user - I WOULD LIKE TO SEE TETHERING! Tether the iPad to the iPhone for on the go 3G. That makes way too much sense to me. And I hope that that will be a software switch option available down the road.

So, are you saying using a cell phone can connect to a netbook to access the internet? How does one connect the two?

Engadget says it is really fast. Of course when you don’t multi-task that is easier. They have to get off that train with this device if not for the iPhone too.

It would have to be connected via USB. Considering the iPad probably won’t have a USB port, you would have to fashion some sort of cable to connect the two. I sometimes connect my Blackberry to my laptop when I’m not in range of a wifi hotspot and connect to the internet that way.
