SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Apple will sell its newly unveiled tablet-style iPad starting at $499.
The iPad resembles an iPhone, but larger. Apple will sell some iPad models with data plans from AT&T, with no contract required.
Apple Inc. will have to convince consumers, many of whom already have Internet-connected phones, computers and TVs, that they'll want to pay that much for such a device, when many small, lightweight "netbooks" cost less than $400.

It’s up: http://www.apple.com/
I predict record pre-orders, but then again, I thought the Chargers were headed for the Super Bowl.
Wow, a giant iPod touch, and still only 64 gigs. Now apps are $10 bucks. Personally, I don’t see te need, but I’m sure Apple will sell millions to the geek set who will line up all night to fork over their cash.
That actually sounds cheap.
That sounds about right. In some ways it reminds me of the Blackberry Storm. With a 1 ghz processor, I can’t imagine it’s incredibly fast. I still don’t understand why you have to get service thru a telecommunications provider. The only thing I can think is that it’s like Verizon trying to sell a netbook with an aircard for cheaper than you can get it at Wal-Mart/Best Buy, etc. Also, I assume you can purchase it without signing a contract with AT&T.
AP could report its way out of a paper bag.
The $499 version has no 3G and thus no use for an AT&T data plan.
That's a flash drive, more expensive per gig. This is a very reasonable price before discounts.
Does it come with a man bag to carry it?
Screen is 1024x768.
Supports Bluetooth keyboard. (Magic Mouse?)
Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating.
yawn...
Exactly
I’m not complaining about the price point, I’m complaining about the storage size, as in, too small! This large new device wit all this digital content and w’re still stuck with a 64 gig ssd. Double that, and I’ll take a look.
What will you do with it that 64GB is too small? It’s intended to be tethered to a full-blown computer; you keep all your stuff there and dole out what you need. Also, it increasingly uses “the cloud”: most weighty data is stored out there somewhere, transferred to you locally when needed.
Admittedly it will not store your entire DVD collection; I’d assume at some point there will be wireless “cloud” access to your home machine for such availability.
I love my iPhone, but the AT&T service is damn bad, it’s frustrating. This particular device is impressive. I must say that I’m thrilled to get away from a desk, a mouse and a keyboard and still have a screen big enough to satisfy my aging eyes.
I want one.
