NEW YORK, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- A human skull and crossbones once used as a ballot box by a secret society at Yale University will not be auctioned as planned, a New York auction house said.
Christie's auction house confirmed in a statement the human remains once used by the secret Order of Skull and Bones at Yale University were removed from Friday's auction due to a claim on the rights to the remains, CNN said.
The identity of the party behind the claim was not released.
The withdrawn auction item was also to include a book containing the names of all Skull and Bones members between 1831 and 1877.
The bones used as a ballot box by the collegiate group were estimated to be worth as much as $20,000.
The sale was previously opposed by the World Archaeological Congress, which labeled it an "affront to human dignity."
CNN said the archaeological group also suggested the skull may be protected under federal laws because of suspicions it is from an American Indian.

Indian bones?? Puleeeez.....
John Carry and GW Bush were also members of this noxious group of pampered elitists. Sorry, but if someone used a human head for this purpose from one of their relatives, they’d shut this idiot club down fast.
That would be Bush Sr......
the World Archaeological Congress, which labeled it an “affront to human dignity.”
BUT,, the skull and bones society isn’t as long as they keep the skull in their clubhouse?
And they use an *actual skull* for a ballot box. And some noxious student took a saw and cut the top open,,, FOR FUN. In police work this is called a “clue”. (in case you wonder how much they might worry about the dignity of the individual, or if they would sweat killing a few, or a bunch of us, when they need to)
In a general revolt, this place needs to be placed on the “to be burned” list. Thats of course, for when we storm the Bastille.
This really doesn’t bother me.
I’ve never heard of them hurting anyone.
Where is a good Raider fan when you need one?
Human remains have been used in rituals for hundreds, if not thousands of years. To me, this skull and bones is no different than the Tibetan chalices made from skulls or shrunken heads from New Guinea or South America. And it is only modestly less macabre than the sugar skull made for the Mexican Day of the Dead. It’s a piece of history, created in a different time.
