Police: Shots fired on steps of Texas Capitol

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas state police say one person is in custody after gunshots were fired on the south steps of the state Capitol. It wasn’t immediately clear if anybody was wounded.

More than half a dozen Texas Department of Public Safety cars descended on the Capitol Thursday afternoon, and officers toting rifles surrounded the building in Austin.

Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Lisa Block says the building is on lockdown and a suspect is in custody. Capitol police say a man in custody and they’re “securing” the building as a precaution. The south steps are blocked by yellow police tape.

Tristan Letscher, police communications operator for the public safety department, says it’s unknown if the suspect acted alone.
