significantly over-priced

Apple products are not "over priced".. it a design feature

Actually, I accept that. The design is working, too.

I happen to know of good source that Apple ordered 10,000 hi-tech color displays - this display looks about 10 years old.

The reports I've seen show that you forgot three more zeroes...

is this an early 90’s prototype? it looks like it.

That's the Apple Newton Message Pad 2000 from 1997, here's it's younger brother, the 2100 from 1998, next to the iPhone from 2008:

The Newton line lasted about 5 years before being killed by Steve Jobs, when he returned to Apple, for being non-profitable.

Are you kidding me? Was this made by Mattel?

If I can date myself....

When I was in Boot camp, and we got our XM16e1's issued to us, during the initial familiarization with the weapon I removed the hand guards and noticed stamped inside was the manufactures stamp.... you guessed it "Made by Mattel".

No further comment needed?

The BIG difference between the two:

The Newton had no solid vision behind it. The idea of what it should be changed several times during development, and so did the technology behind it. You know Jobs isn’t going to put out a tablet unless he has a clear vision for what it should be.

However, you can thank the Newton for the term “PDA.”

Seriously revolutionary. It’s almost like a personal digital assistant. Hey, a PDA. It would be the first one. :-)
