Debate over Poe burial site rages

RICHMOND, Va.- A representative for the family of Edgar Allan Poe said the body of the late U.S. author should not be moved from Baltimore despite claims to the contrary.

The Baltimore Sun said Sunday while some individuals have called for Poe's remains to be relocated to a U.S. city other than Baltimore, a man whose great-grandfather was the late author's cousin rejected such claims Saturday.

"In the spirit of fairness, the family simply cannot agree to move the body just yet," Harry Lee Poe said in Richmond, Va.

Baltimore, Boston and Richmond are among the cities laying claim to the legacy of Poe, given the author was born in Boston, raised in Richmond and died in Baltimore on Oct. 7, 1849.

While the Poe family representative voiced opposition to relocating the body of "The Raven" author, Poe House curator Jeff Jerome said no firm position was offered regarding what city has rightful claim to the Poe legacy.

"If they want to shy away from a dialogue about this, that's certainly their prerogative," Jerome told the Sun. "I'm pleased that they came to the conclusion they did about the body. Poe died in Baltimore, and he should stay here."

For the first time in 60 years, the mysterious visitor failed to appear at Poe’s gravesite this morning.

Given Poe’s propensity for the macabre, perhaps they should just give each city a piece of him.

Have you ever noticed how much Poe looks like George Noory?

Thanks!

In a Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008 file photo, the original grave of Edgar Allen Poe is shown with a bottle of cognac and roses left by a mysterious visitor, in Baltimore. At 5:30 a.m., Tuesday Jan. 19, 2010 curator Jeff Jerome, curator of the Poe House and Museum, emerged to announce that the mysterious visitor, who had always appeared between midnight and 5:30 a.m., never showed.

And I rest so composedly,

Now, in my bed,

That any beholder

Might fancy me dead --

Might start at beholding me,

Thinking me dead.

Tried to visit the site, driving from the inner harbor, years ago. Once the burned out and abandoned cars started appearing and the brownstones no longer had windows, we decided to cut our losses and turned around.

That is an extremely odd story. Who is calling for Poe’s remains to be moved? Why would the reporter conceal the identity of “those” who are calling for the move? Debate rages? How can a debate rage when only one side is quoted, and he makes a very mild response? It sounds like there is less to this than meets the eye.

Poe had a life long battle with the literary establishment in Boston, which he often referred to as "the frog-pondians". I don't think he would have liked to be buried there. In his own words:
"We despise them and defy them, the transcendental vagabonds, and they may all go to hell together."

Philadelphia and Baltimore Fight Over Edgar Allan Poe’s Body

It’s almost like a scene from one of Edgar Allan Poe’s stories –Philadelphia is trying to claim Poe’s body from Baltimore. Actually, I may have exaggerated. It’s only one person, but he makes a good case. Edward Pettit, a Poe scholar in Philadelphia, argues that Poe wrote most of his best work in Philadelphia, which was a violent place in the mid-19th century when Poe lived there. Pettit says the city’s sinister atmosphere inspired Poe’s work. This may not do much for Philadelphia’s public relations, however.

Many cities could make a claim on Poe. He was born in Boston, lived in The Bronx in New York City and died in Baltimore. He even courted a woman in Providence, Rhode Island. Poe described himself as a Virginian. He spent much time in Richmond, including his early years, and always planned to return there. Relatives wanted to bury him in Brooklyn.
