Today's buzz on Twitter about the Rev. Pat Robertson seemed like a cruel hoax against the man who blamed America's sins for the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 and Hurricane Katrina.
But no. Robertson did indeed strike again today during his show "The 700 Club" on the Christian Broadcasting Network. Calling for donations to CBN's disaster relief fund, he blamed Tuesday's 7.3 magnitude earthquake on the Haitians' "pact with the devil" two centuries ago while seeking liberation from the French. Take a look at the video. So, why did so many missionaries, clergy and seminarians die on Tuesday? The Seeker is waiting on a call back from Rev. Robertson to find out.
I did reach the Rev. Erwin Lutzer, pastor of The Moody Church in Chicago. He appeared on Robertson's show more than a decade ago to promote his book "One Minute After You Die." Lutzer said not all evangelical Christians agree with Robertson.
"While it's true that all natural disasters reflect the fact that the earth is fallen as a result of sin, it is disingenuous for anyone to assume that one area of the world is being judged more harshly than another, because of natural disasters," he said. "For example it would be wrong for us to conclude that New Orleans was a city that was made more sinful than Las Vegas because one was victimized by a natural disaster and the other wasnt."
Some say Robertson's comments appeal to a fan base that believes he hears God's voice and knows the divine mind. Lutzer said not all evangelical Christians believe that to be true. Many, like himself, stick to what the Bible says about God's mercy and forgiveness.....

You said, “An interesting thing to throw into the mix is all the people who died during the black plague who contracted it by congregating in churches.”
Consider this also ...
“The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth [it] to heart: and merciful men [are] taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil [to come].”
ISAIAH 57:1
If Pat really was a man of God, he would have been in Haiti years ago trying to win souls for Jesus. But then, he’d have to give up his comfortable digs.

And does it work as it should?
I’m not defending Robertson, but he did say we should all pray for the Haitians. And they should pray too.
Pat may be wrong.
What exactly are is he praying for?
Does he think its a wake-up call to God?
I think it’s sad that some folks still have this Old Testament view of God. That he is a vengful, easily insulted and spiteful. That he would deliberately bring suffering on innocents including children. You miss the whole message of the Gospel, of love , of God’s grace, his yearning for fellowship. Only he can see into a man’s heart and would never by his nature commit wanton acts of evil by burying whole towns in rubble or spreading infectious diseases deliberately. These things are of the our sinful and flawed world and it is by Adam’s disobedience our sentence. Not to sound like a deist but these things happen of their own accord. They happen cause God is no cosmic puppeteer, he allows us free will and yes the ability for our wonderful planet to cause great harm to us. It’s easy for people to try and box up God and make sense of his nature, but he will not be catalogued and judged. Nothing these people did , including barking at the moon to some animist God or Goddess means they deserved this. Once again bad theology and people like Robertson not well grounded in the Bible and the art and science of studying it.
And as the Apostle Paul said: For us, to die is gain.
Philippians 1:21
For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
So he chooses to discuss New Orleans and Haiti. Both Catholic cities? And he’s a Southern Baptist minister? No, there’s no anti-Catholicism inherent in these remarks. None at all.
Except shut Pat Robertson up. Why is it this moron {kinda the right's Jimmy Carter) just insists on giving the good guys a black eye at every opportunity and our enemies a hammer to beat us with over the head. Isn't there among his many worthy charities a farm for senile old clucks? Geez!
That is a good thing.
Bless you
Whatever works!
I’m sure he’s already knelt and prayed for the Haitians. My favorite charity is Operation Blessing which got it’s start with Pat Robertson and the 700 club. I’m sure as heck not going to trust the Red Cross or the UN with my money.
I don't believe God caused the earthquake as a punishment. He allowed it but, didn't cause it. Far to often we blame God, when it's sin that entered the world that caused the quake in the first place. If man had never fallen into sin, there would not be any earthquakes at all. God loves us and His mercy is greater than His judgments. I do however believe there grinding poverty is a direct result of there practice of black magic and voodoo. Satan is out to kill steal and destroy, you invite him in, this is what you'll get.
Yes, me too. Maybe I was a bit harsh. His heart is generally in the right place but when he says something so catastrophically stupid as this you just have to wonder sometimes. And he has done it more than just once. It's a pattern that bothers me a lot.
No doubt, we are all guilty of trying to put God in a box.
I didn't look much further for material on the internet ~ I think I'd have to go dig up one of my books to get back to the details.
The mulatto class consists of several different groups built up over the centuries. I think the Multatto state in the South essentially took over the place about 1826 or so. There were three different states in the place for a couple of decades.
Haitian history is very complex.
I wouldn't put it past Robertson to confound Voodoo with what amounts to semi-industrialized feudalism ~ but maybe he wasn't. Sometimes Pat doesn't give you enough information to know what's really on his mind.
The cold, hard facts of this case are that Robertson said something that's pretty clearly true, but quite possibly he misunderstood. His critics don't know enough about Haiti to accurately criticize Robertson so they go into one of those stick out the right arm hissy screech rages they are so famous for.
Look at that picture. He’s really beginning to bear an uncanny resemblance to Jimmy Carter.
