Most available hand gun ammunition during "civil unrest". (Vanity)
Self

Posted on 01/09/2010 1:39:54 PM PST by GaltTrader

We are doing our annual review of emergency preparedness supplies and procedures. One possible situation is closure of commercial ammunition sources during a civil unrest situation.

We would appreciate opinions on the most likely and second most likely available hand gun ammo in such a situation.

agreed plus you can get 500 rounds of 22 ammo for less than $20

AND, if you have an accurate rifle you can have an effective range of about 130 yards. With the right rifling and the correct bullet weight(about 60 grains)you can extend that out even further. .22s are highly underrated.

I have a couple ruger 10/22s my dad gave me that we use for plinking, and I ordered these 25 round mags, very fun! and they clip together so you can go through 50 rounds pretty quick

Yes, I agree with commonality of some firearms.
A Beretta PX-4 Storm w/ a CX-4 Storm Carbine.
Both also accept the same magazines.

It depends on where you are. If your commercial sources are shut down, The only place you’ll get anything really (without breaking into closed stores i assume?) is if you know someone who reloads. otherwise, all you’re gonna have is whats in your closet.

Otherwise, while 9mm, .40S&W and .38spcl are all popular, you cant find them where I am. Only thing on the shelves Is pretty much shotgun shells, .22lr and 7mm. So, the best option is .22lr, although its a rimfire round and Isn’t going to be very effective besides slight deterrence and maybe hunting squirrels.

I’ve noticed the same thing - Dicks and Walmart locally are usually out of 9mm, .45 & 357 mag but nearly always have .40 S&W.

There is great wisdom in carrying pistol caliber carbines/rifles that will digest your handgun ammo.

One that I personally like is the Marlin Model 1894 in .44 magnum. A Ruger Alaskan .44 backs it up quite nicely.

Most of the cops will be carrying 9mm.

A pistol is actually most useful for dispatching the wounded after the fighting dies down....

The weapons doing the most killing will be shotguns and .30 caliber rifles.

Check with your local law enforcement about what ammunition they use. If, in the unfortunate situation, you have to shoot someone the perp can’t say you were using some “super duper survivalist dum-dum cop killer” bullet and will provide a bit of defense from an innevitable lawsuit. Otherwise in a total breakdown of law and order you will have to use what you practice with. There is a saying in my IPSC club “you can’t miss fast enough”. If you’re shooting something you’re not use to shooting and miss everything you aim at, it doesn’t matter what you use.

The most available ammo is the ammo that is purchased BEFORE any unrest. I’m not sure exactly what “unrest” is, but should it happen, the most available is what’s already in the magazine.

If it comes to “dispatching the wounded”, I’m not wasting ammo.

I have some really ugly wallpaper in the laundry room that just WON'T peel off.

Bet I could remove it with one of those!
