Dr Pepper, the oldest major soft drink in the U.S., is teaming up with legendary rockers KISS as a first-time advertiser during Super Bowl XLIV. The ad will air in the second quarter of the big game and feature Gene Simmons returning as “Dr. Love” in the next evolution of the brand’s “Trust Me, I’m a Dr” campaign. Paul Stanley and the entire KISS lineup will join Simmons to describe Dr Pepper Cherry’s uniquely smooth taste – achieved with a “kiss” of cherry flavor.

Throughout its 125-year history, Dr Pepper has created some of the most iconic ad campaigns in America, including “I’m a Pepper,” “Be You” and “Just What the Doctor Ordered.” AOL.com ranked the 1970s’ “I’m a Pepper” ad among the “10 Commercial Jingles We Can’t Forget.” The new ad is just one element of Dr Pepper’s year-long celebration of its 125th Anniversary which kicks off Jan. 25, 2010.

The David Naughton commercials from the 70’s were some of the best soft drink commercials ever.

I think they were implying the oldest STILL in existence. I’m 40 and I’ve never seen this brand on the shelf. Where can you find it today?

But Moxie isn't available everywhere. Few young people have ever heard of it. When’s the last time you saw a nationwide commercial for it?

Last time I saw the original cast, Ace had to be wrapped so tightly in spandex, he couldn't move his legs. He had to kinda pivot walk like a compass.

Here in the DFW area, the Dr Pepper commercials with the Kiss guy have been on TV for a couple of weeks. ....I thought the Super Bowl was supposed to be the venue for introducing NEW commercials by the various firms that can shell out the exhorbitant payments for a half-minute or one minute of air time.

Of course, Dr Pepper (no period after the Dr) was invented in Waco TX, so maybe they are just testing the commercial before going worldwide at the Super Bowl.

You can find Moxie at Galco’s Soda Pop Shop at 5702 York Blvd. in the northeast Los Angeles community of Highland Park. It should also be available at Bristol Farms, a chain of high-end grocery stores in Southern California.
