In some states it is mandatory to inform the officer you are carrying. Elsewise, I’d agree. If not asked, don’t tell. This applies to ccw permit holders. If you have a firearm properly stored, the same applies....... don’t tell.
In Michigan if you have a firearm in your car and you are pulled over, you are obligated by law to produce your CPL along with your drivers license and proof of insurance and inform the officer that you have a firearm on board..........
My last ticket which was a bunch of years ago, I attempted to give my CPL to the officer and informed him of my firearm but he said he didn't want to see them........He was ok with it.
As a side note tho, your license plate is flagged with the fact that you have a CPL which would then indicate that you are probably carrying a firearm........
Anyone who informs the officer that pulled them over that they have a CPL and that they have a firearm on board is wise to do so, whether required or not. They're not a dork..........
I was stopped once while not carrying. The cop went back to the patrol car and came back and wanted to know if I had a gun on me. It takes two seconds for them to see I had a permit. If you don't inform them and you're carrying you will lose your CCW and probably your ability to ever conceal carry.
This guy is a putz.
I asked five police officers and got three different answers.
1. Dont say anything until the police officers asks.
2. Tell the police right off so there isnt any misunderstandings.
3. Dont say anything at all unless you are ordered to get out of the car.
The other two wanted to know what kind of pistol I carried. When I told them either a Colt Commander or a M92 Beretta, they said go with the Colt.
Earlier, I posted that in the State of Texas, you were required to tell any officer who approached you that you had a CHL, if you were carrying a concealed weapon.
I was wrong. There law was changed in 2009. CHL holders no longer are required to inform officers that they have a CHL unless asked. The article at the link talks about this and about some of the problems that have resulted in Ohio from a provision that required citizens to notify officers.
