Fly fishing is a sport that was made popular by the book and movie A River Runs Through It. Some people like it to catch fish, some just enjoy seeing the brightly colored line sweep through the air over the water. And now, fly fishing is also used for healing.
"You get in touch with nature and forget about all your problems, it's just a natural way to heal yourself," said military veteran Kenny Stanford who did two tours of duty in Iraq. It's that idea that has led to Project Healing Waters -- a group dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active duty military personnel and veterans. The Project Healing Waters group in our region focuses on fly fishing and fly tying but they are planning to branch out.
"A mending project, where these guys are gonna build a drift boat, which will be used throughout this territory for wounded warriors and veterans," said Project Healing Waters regional coordinator Scott Scrip.
To be able to offer more to these military personnel and veterans, Project Healing Waters needs your help. The group is looking for volunteers who are interested in the sport and are looking for a way to thank veterans for their service and help with their recovery.

Sounds like a great idea for those few that live near fly-fishing waters.
I generally agree. Izaac Walton’s 1653 book “The Compleat Angler” popularized fly fishing in England. But Redford’s movie brought it to the American masses — which may be why our favorite streams are so crowded these days. Nothing wrong with that, I guess, but I sure miss those times of solitude with just me, the water, the beauty of nature and a wild trout I was trying to tempt to bite.

I understand your point but apparently all water is fly fishing waters. Fly fishing isn’t limited to a lazy stream. Salt water fly fishing does not suck.
Since you realise my point, then you know that even though all water is potentially fly-fishing water, to try and fly-fish from the beach or in say Ches Bay, the difficulties would outweigh any fun you could have.
Unless of course the IOPTF has anything to say about it.

The sport of fly fishing took off in the 70s and 80s. The sport was de-mystified, the cast was changed to eliminate problems intoduced by previous elitests and the sport has bloomed.

I wish the government would stay the hell out of my fishing. Its bad enough that Florida has recently enacted licensing requirements that state I now need a license to fish just about anywhere(dock, shore, boat, etc.
I don’t catch enough of anything to matter to these folks in Washington.
Some of my best fly fishing memories were on the lawn at the Lincoln Elementary school on Harris street under the watch full eye of the master Lloyd Silvious of Eureka . It went downhill from there...
We tied flies as kids, up until Mom caught us shooting redbirds for their feathers.
When I got back into fly tying the hot flies were blue, the only problem was the lack of good bright blue feathers at the stores.
Amazing what can be found outside of the stores!:)
