Liked reading the Finns method of eliminating the Russian
tanks with a little bit of gas.That took nerves to wait till
they were that close
They lost something like one heavy cruiser [BLUECHER], one light cruiser [LEIPZIG or KOLN?], and half of their destroyers. Additionally SCHARNHORST, GNIESENAU and ADMIRAL HIPPER were damaged.
They sank something on the order of at least four British destroyers, and the aircraft carrier GLORIOUS.
It was pretty bad. I went and found that reference I was thinking of, it is in Weinberg’s “A World At Arms” and says that by July 1, 1940 the German Navy could only deploy 1 heavy cruiser, 2 light cruisers and 4 destroyers with the rest of the fleet either sunk or damaged at that time.
The Bluecher was sunk by a combination of fire from a Norwegian fort gun that was an ancient variety purchased (ironically) from the Krupp company along with torpedoes purchased from pre-WWI Austria.
The Russians might want to think twice before rushing troops into Afghanistan. It could prove as costly as, oh, say the invasion of Finland.
This is such an odd story, it's hard to know what to make of it. On the one hand, these Philadelphia Navy Yard employees promised "to report any instance of subversive attitude or action that comes to our notice."
On the other hand, they refuse to promise "to avoid strikes and to seek to settle any complaint with the proper means of adjustment."
Hmmmmmm....
