Teens who listen to music that mentions marijuana are significantly more likely to use the drug, a new study finds.

The research was based on surveys with 959 ninth-graders.

"Students who listen to music with the most references to marijuana are almost twice as likely to have used the drug than their peers whose musical tastes favor songs less focused on substance use,"...

"Interestingly, we also found that exposure to marijuana in music was not associated with other high-risk behaviors, such as excessive alcohol consumption," Primack said. "This suggests that there is a real link between the marijuana lyrics and marijuana use."

Among the study participants, 12 percent identified themselves as current marijuana users, with 32 percent identifying themselves as having previously tried the substance. The researchers analyzed the content of songs that the students reported listening to.

The average participant listened to 21.8 hours of music per week and heard about 40 marijuana references in music per day...

DUH ALERT!

Glamorizing and glorifying drug use through repeating that over and over in songs will do it every time.

I could have told you that for FREE!

Just like “oral sex” isn't sex - Guess what happened with that? Kids have oral sex thinking it isn't sex, thanks to horny, ole Bill.

take it a step further, perhaps kids that do drugs prefer to listen to music that glamorizes drug use? Correlation does not imply causality as any scientist knows.

So since the study relied on the participants to identify that current or previous users, does the music listening cause the drug use, or does the drug use cause the desire to listen to the music?

"Although it may be that heavy exposure to music about marijuana causes marijuana smoking, it may also be that those who smoke marijuana seek out music with lyrics related to marijuana," Primack said.

So did MSNBC write the headline that they wanted, or did the researchers title the paper that way?

Sex, drugs, and rock and roll - they're about 40-50 years behind the times here.

So...does the music cause the drug use or are drug users more likely to listen to music with drug references?

And to think that someone paid for this study!

Kids who ride horses are more likely to listen to songs about horse riding.

Kids who surf are more likely to listen to songs about surfing.

I started taking drugs before I listened to “drug glorifying” music, and can’t remember any of the music I listened to “glorifying drugs”. It was just great rock.

>>>Correlation does not imply causality as any scientist knows.

Exactly. I grew up and still enjoy Warner Borthers cartoons - does that make me pull an Elmer Fudd and blast away indiscriminately with a shotgun? No. Do I run off the edge of a cliff only to fall after looking down? No.

THE REEFER SONG
(c. 1936)

Dreamed about reefer five foot long,

Mighty immense, but not too strong.

You’ll be high but not for long,

If you’re a viper

I am the king of everything.

Got to get high before I swing.

Light a tea, and let it be,

If you’re a viper.

When your throat gets dry, you know you’re high.

Everything is dandy.

Truck on down to the candy store,

Blow your cork on peppermint candy.

Then you know your body’s sent.

You don’t care if you don’t pay the rent.

The sky is high and so am I,

If you’re a viper
