Word For The Day, Monday, 12/21/09

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

augur; verb/noun

–noun 1. one of a group of ancient Roman officials charged with observing and interpreting omens for guidance in public affairs. 2. soothsayer; prophet. –verb (used with object) 3. to divine or predict, as from omens; prognosticate. 4. to serve as an omen or promise of; foreshadow; betoken: Mounting sales augur a profitable year. –verb (used without object) 5. to conjecture from signs or omens; predict. 6. to be a sign; bode: The movement of troops augurs ill for the peace of the area.

Etymology:c.1374 (implied in augury), from L. augur, a religious official in ancient Rome who foretold events by interpreting omens, perhaps originally meaning "an increase in crops enacted in ritual," in which case it probably is from Old L. *augos (gen. *augeris) "increase," and is related to augere "increase" (see augment). The more popular theory is that it is from L. avis "bird," since flights, singing, and feeding of birds or entrails from bird sacrifices were an important part of divination (cf. auspicious). The second element would be from garrire "to talk." The verb is 1549, from the noun.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

When a priest encourages his parishoners to shoplift, it doesn't augur well for his congregation's spiritual health.
The married father-of-two insisted his unusual advice did not break the Bible commandment 'Thou shalt not steal' - because God's love for the poor outweighs his love for the rich.

....

Delivering his festive lesson, Father Jones told the congregation: 'My advice, as a Christian priest, is to shoplift. I do not offer such advice because I think that stealing is a good thing, or because I think it is harmless, for it is neither.

'I would ask that they do not steal from small family businesses, but from large national businesses, knowing that the costs are ultimately passed on to the rest of us in the form of higher prices.

On a lighter note, here is a hilarious video of Tim Hawkins about his take on a familiar Christmas Carol: Do You Hear What I Hear

The Obama Administration is using an earth augur on the Constitution, and it does not augur well for our personal freedoms!

A+++ anglican, i am guessing? not that it would be beyond the realm of the possible for it to be a RC priest.
Last evening the priest at St James told those that were not able to make confession on Saturday and had a MORTAL SIN on their souls, that they could take communion so long as they went to confession as soon as possible. i am fairly sure that IS NOT KOSHER!!! if he were to do some blanket absolution of the congregants gathered at the Mass, MAYBE that would be ok, but not this well if you were intending to go but couldn’t get out yesterday bc of the snow, it’s ok to haul your mortal sin-stained soul up for the Eucharist? yes, i realize that Protestants would see this differently, i am posting this for Catholics opinions on whether this jibes with their understanding.

Four long years,
America must endure,
the left’s messiah
and his hopey cure.

First the spending
shot into high gear,
now the healthcare bill,
more change I fear.

Next is global warming,
on theOne’s agenda,
while the snow piles high
on the nation’s rotunda.

It is not a good augur,
the socialist’s spending,
leaving us the bill,
truly a very bad ending.

So what can we do,
to whom can we turn?
In 2010 will the voters
give them the burn?

Will we flock to the polls
our anger burning bright,
and vote them all out
to end our miserable plight?

They seem not to worry,
about how the voters will pay
for their socialist’s agenda
in which we have no say.

So let us rise to the challenge,
and throw the bums out!
Don’t leave a one in office,
let’s show them our clout.

I suspect the big guy upstairs is not too happy with that clown of a priest. He should be soliciting aid for his flock to get them through the tough times. Instead, he is promoting the breaking of the ten commandments. Not exactly a brilliant move.

I do believe that the senate ‘rats have made a grave mistake that will come back to bite them in the ass very soon-I find it particularly chilling that this happened on 12-21-preview of 12-21-2012 maybe?

Making deals in the dark of night
Really doesn’t augur well
For those mafia-like senators
Who’ve bought a ticket to hell

2010 is an election year-
Are these idiots all deaf and blind?
They’ve been told in plainest terms
We’ll be kicking their behind

It won’t be a pretty sight at all-
Maybe worse than now expected
When the fury of betrayed citizens
Falls on those they have elected

“not able to make confession on Saturday and had a MORTAL SIN on their souls, that they could take communion”

I have to chime in on that one-I’ve never heard of such a thing happening.

I’d hate for the mods to start purging moon-landing deniers or vaccine proponents.

That's quite a combo.
