Word to the wise: do NOT stick your hand down the shute of a snowblower to clear an ice jam if the auger is still spinning. I let go of the hand control and thought the auger has stopped. Three broken fingers and two to-the-bone lacerations on my middle finger on my right hand have taught me this lesson today. The ER nurses and docs were very impressed. No work, no driving, great pain meds, lots of antibiotics, and seeing a hand surgeon tomorrow. Dumb, dumb, dumb...
Ouch! That hurts thinking about it. Reminds me of when I was a kid, helping my Grandpa. We were shelling corn, using one of those old belt driven cornshellers. The sheller was being driven by a tractor. I stuck my hand down in there to dislodge a stuck ear. Grabbed a hold of my fingers and good!
In the hospital that day, there were numerous people with hand injuries, and a lot of them with their fingers MISSING. The ER people told my dad that they dreaded heavy, wet snow, because they knew what the morning would bring.
I wish you a speedy recovery. I guess I’m cheap or old fashioned since I’m “shovel ready” as opposed to having a snow blower.
Wasn’t drinking at all!! I was trying to get it done and still make the sermon at church. Just got in a hurry and didn’t use my head. Wish I had a strong drink now. Waiting for the percocet to kick in...
OUCH!!! Pretty damn stupid but we’ve all done stuff like that and worse - I know I have.
Good luck and a speedy recovery!
Low tech always works for me.
I only have one scar from a shovel.
Good luck with your hand, big truck.
Wow, I’ve seen some dumb ass comments here before but yours is clearly one of the worst, o’perfect one
With all due respect, if it happened to me, I'd be too embarrassed to tell the world.
Hold muh beer....................
Good luck. Last November I had my thumb in the wrong place on a buddies crossbow. The string took half of the top joint off on my thumb. They sewed it back and it functions well enough today, though it’s still pretty numb a year later.
I really didn't think you were drinking. It was the "Hold muh beer" alert.......
My thumb too. But doesn’t it feel like you’re alway’s rubbing your thumb with sandpaper when you use the thumb now? Took mine off on my tractor.
My advice and the accompanying graphics on reply #36 were pretty darn funny. Too bad you missed them (I guess the moderator is “sensitive”).
Just a word to the wise, sounds to me like you might want to avoid power tools that have more than say, 1/16th HP or so!
Oh, and stay away from toasters too.
;-)
Actually, we know this is just a play to get sympathy from the wifey. Good luck!

Now wasn’t THAT helpful, made him feel better also?
Just serviced and greaed the machine. The front auger stopped. The top auger is on it’s own shaft and was still spinning. Should have checked it first before trying to clear the jam. I know, I know - dumb, dumb, dumb.

You have my deepest sympathies.
I broke my right wrist (distal radius, ice skating) and life was a bear for at least two months with only my feeble left hand to button clothing, unscrew jar lids, type and I don’t remember what all else. There was pain but the handicap annoyed me more.
All better now, as I know you will be too!
Why a surgeon? Pins? Plates?
IV Demerol my friend. The percocet is useless. Good luck waiting. Get your doctor to give you a few intramuscular syringes. Bam! Pain gone.
Typing left handed only! Thr right hand is to be elevated at all times according to the doc. Should be inertesting sleeping tonight - maybe in the recliner! I’ll see what the hand doc says tomorrow.
