Former U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has bought a 940-acre ranch along the Big Hole River.
Keith Urbahn, a spokesman for Rumsfeld, said Donald and his wife Joyce Rumsfeld intend to keep the property largely as is.
"Mrs. Rumsfeld was born in Montana, she has relatives in the state and the Rumsfelds have always thought very well of the state," he said in a telephone interview from Washington, D.C. "They plan to spend some time out there to enjoy it." The property in Madison County on Burma Road south of Twin Bridges includes hayfields, wetlands and frontage on the Big Hole River.

I hope Rummy and Joyce have many more years together to enjoy their bit of paradise. Montana is a lovely state, and I’ve only seen a bit of it, from Bozeman down to West Yellowstone, and up into Big Sky. Would love to go back out and see more!

I recall feeling (yes feeling) pride when driving by a previous Presidents ranch in California.
Can’t help but having the same for the Rumsfelds being here.
As a steward of “The Land”, I think that he surpasses most.
It almost as good as the rumors of Sarah Palin moving here.
Also could that president's ranch have been down where I now live--Santa Barbara/Santa Ynez Valley?
A friend from many years ago lives in Missoula. I had planned, when we were staying in Big Sky, to drive up there to see her. I know it was a long round trip, but I was willing to do it. She waved me off, though, because that year there were tons of forest fires, and apparently parts of the Interstate around Missoula were closed.
Yes, well, it's highly likely.
A lovely drive up in the mountains with (AIR) a nondescript iron gate entrance on a curve in the road which is (or was) lined with trees and underbrush?
I'll add that I was amazed (being, at the time, from New England) how one could go from the warm beaches of Santa Barbara up into the mountains and having to pass a road grader which was moving snow. It was more interesting being on a m/c and not adequately dressed for this!
Cresting a mountain top and seeing the spread of open desert below added to the days ride. I used Solvang as an end point before returning to S.B. (that route being another experience since I followed my nose instead a map).
You live in a beautiful area.
It's all part of the glamor of living here (/s). I was taken aback when first driving out here in late December and seeing 'rail road crossing' barriers on the highway (what the heck?). It took a few to realize that they were for closing the highway for snow/wind... not something I was interested in having happen in the middle of the night and no where to go back to!
By the by, I've driven through a few of the fires around Missoula (and other areas). Lots of interesting times when you see smoke and you're in the back woods on a dead end forest road!
Do consider returning though (especially before the price of gas goes up again -- or 0bama enacts some other means to close down travel/off road access).
Oh, we’ll for sure get back up there for a visit, at some point. Hubby’s best friend from high school bought a house up there as a vacation place, so we’ll have to visit them!
