Circle of friends The importance of other people in our preparedness plans
Backwoods Home Magazine ^ | Dec. 17, 2009 | Claire Wolfe

Hardcore survivalists cherish what I call the "George Romero Scenario." It goes like this: The proverbial poop has hit the propeller. Cities collapse into chaos. But we, the prepared, are...well, we're prepared. We hunker in our rural bunkers, clutching our Super Whiz-Whacker 3000 combat arms, eagle-eyed and ready for any eventuality. We boldly fend off wave after ravenous wave of starving city folk who stagger at us like unstoppable zombies in a Romero horror flick. These zombies crave not our living flesh, but our six-gallon, mylar-lined superpails of dried lentils, our root cellars full of last year's carrots, and our genuine, federally issued Meals Ready to Eat.

Brilliant Claire, one of your best. And badly needed.

I have been dabbling with the idea of making my own MREs. There are several instructive links I have found.

And I concur about the booze.

Nothing beats some old French Cognac in SHTF situations.

This is such tripe. If you look at actual government collapses, like the USSR, Argentina, Zimbabwe, etc. etc. you will notice a trend. Nothing really changes, the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, the currency gets trashed and replaced and old obligations (pensions, SS) get eliminated.

There is no rioting, no one rebels, hungry beaten down people don't do that kind of stuff. Life goes on, but now it is a reduced life, money for food and clothes takes priority.

The way to prepare is to prepare financially. Wasting money on guns or any of the survival stuff is worse than stupid. Getting a foreign source of income is important.

What do you think our Neighborhood Watch is my friend? That's an OUTSTANDING way to find out who in your parts will put up and who won't.

Then you work on the ones with leadership potential. Next thing you know you've got a cadre. It takes a while, but it's worth it.

I’m doing research for my next book, studying Yugoslavia 1990s, and Beirut 1980s.

If you want a vivid picture of what “failure to cooperate” can lead to, go to Youtube, and just use search words “Sarajevo 1992 sniper.”

After a while looking at video clips of that civil war, it makes you REALLY want to think about how to get along.

You really don’t want to live next to a place called, “Sniper Alley.”

add a little honey and you have a decent cough syrup for colds..

A little shot of the hair of the dog could help one deal with a minor SHTF situation.

We are looking to next spring to start our wine making expedition from a cabelas kit. If our grapes and blueberries come through next year we’ll have the fruit for the wine too..

For some reason I’ve always wanted to make wine.

You bet. Damn right. I also still jog, and it gets me around the ‘hood, eyeballing my male neighbors of a certain ex-military bearing, waving, giving the old hooyah. We kind of know who’s “reliable.” We can put down a field of fire, maybe. I hope we do as well at getting along.

At least, in your own subdivision. You HAVE to be tight. But the problem comes in (historically) when the local/regional/national militia/army rolls in, with orders or an inclination toward ethnic cleansing. And they don’t know or love your neighbors of the wrong background. Nothing breaks up cozy neighborhood camraderie like being ordered to shoot a neighbor, or else you will be shot as a traitor/coward.

Not to mention what happens to your wives and daughters, if the “other” militia/army rolls in.

Cities get REAL ugly when cooperation breaks down and old hatreds flare. There ain’t enough Black Hills match boattails in the world to see you through a decade living along “sniper alley.”

the thing is, a dozen country boys with hunting rifles and good boots wouldnt make it easy for a bunch of weekend warriors.

Sooner or later youde see people on street corners in the country wearing Canadian army boots.

Preparedness is such a daunting task it’s hard to figure where to begin.

That's one way to look at it. Another way is to consciously take notes one of what you use and how much, and just incrementally prepare as you are able.

1. Water

2. Defense

3. Escape plan (if you're in the city)

4. Medicine and hygine items

etc. etc. etc.

You know, that sort of thing.

Prayer, first and foremost, for inspiration as to what you'll need in your particular situation.

And secondly, remind yourself that you'll be fine. This isn't a fear thing. It's a self-empowerment thing.

OK, I was following you right up until you said we don’t need guns or “survival stuff,” what we really need is A FOREIGN SOURCE OF INCOME?........

I am a cynic, and think that most people will lie down and take whatever misery is forced on them. BUT, I think more people in the United States will be willing to get creative and resist than in countries with cultures of submission. What was that quote about “a rifle behind every blade of grass.” That isn’t so in our cities, but it sure IS so in flyover country.

Secondly, a foreign source of income is likely to be less than useless in a serious meltdown. Doesn’t it make more sense to have a piece of land on which you can find, grow and hunt what you need to eat? They are available all over the country for practically nothing. I have one. Beats the heck out of a foreign source of income! LOL!
