Fifty Ugliest Cars of the Past 50 Years
A Half-Century of Automotive Eyesores By Damian Joseph
Considering how many new cars are rolled out every year, it's no surprise that a few might be just plain homely. There's a chance that certain styles might become fashionable with a dash of retro hip. (Well, maybe not from the 1970s.) But for the most part, the following 50 cars will never be anything but design duds.

PT Cruisers are great looking. Whoever did this list has nutty ideas about cars. He makes glaring non-car-guy mistakes in several places, the kind of mistakes that would make a real car guy pity him. For instance, he talks about the El Camino in the pic having “mystifiying hubcaps”...but it doesn’t have hubcaps. It has steel wheels with beauty rings which any car guy knows are a totally different thing. He also critizes one of the sports cars for having a front end that’s wider than the passenger compartment. But it’s very common for sports cars to have those proportions. Corvettes from the 60s or 70s take that look to the extreme (a very good looking extreme) with their pinched waist opening into broad flared fenders at the front and rear. He just makes too many n00b mistakes to be taken seriously.
Yeah, his putting the El Camino on the list is another sign that he should stick to writing about coffee machines or something, not cars. El Caminos look great. So does the Ford version, the Ranchero.
Get a rope.
Thanks, guys. I know I have owned one or two of the uglies, but I have never figured the “box” look.
I’ll take my V-8 T’bird any day, and buy the premium gas with a smile on my face.
Lol, that sucker always looked like it was going sideways.
“Chinese Hummer”
Sounds like something Bill Clinton got in exchange for state secrets.
Thank you~ BUMP ~ going out to my Email list..
I must like ugly. I disagreed with about 60-70% of their picks.
Whaaaaat??? That car is an icon of American automotive beauty. I remember sitting in the back seat and looking up at the sky.
Please, tell me that was a joke I didn’t get.
Thank you! I love it. ;)
The Pacer and Gremlin were way ahead for their time. You could get a Pacer Wagon with a V8. Ran like a BOOH. That was your fancy ‘cross over’ front, one wheel drive vehicle.
Your every day utilitarian, rubber floored, rear drive, straight 6, 3 speed manual, mini crossover was the basic Gremlin.
Everything worked out fine, was cheap, and got better mileage than the Techno-Heaps we have now, Thank You Enviro Nutjobs !.
I was going to suggest my subtractions, and add replacements with witty comments, but there’s just too much work to do! Only about a half dozen, at most, of the cars on this list should be included. As you mentioned, the Pontiac Aztek plus the 1977 Datsun 200 SX, the 1971 Buick Riviera, the Citroen DS (introduced in 1955 but built till 1975), the 1969 Stutz Blackhawk (Superfly’s wet dream), the Lotus Elise, and the 1961 Plymouth Valiant all are way fuglier than most of the cars on this list.
I had the non-hatchback model. Only problem ever with vehicle was there was no way to adjust wheel alignment.
