Tiger Woods’ Wife Elin 'Wants Half His Fortune' as She Prepares to Meet Divorce Lawyers
The Daily Mirror (UK) ^ | 12/16/09 | Ryan Parry

Tiger Woods’ devastated wife has called in California’s top celebrity divorce lawyer, say her friends.

And Elin Nordegren – rocked by her husband’s string of alleged affairs – could get half the £337.5million he has earned in the five years they have been married.

The 29-year-old Swedish model, seen out in Florida yesterday minus her wedding ring, is believed to be meeting celebrity lawyer Sorrell Trope next week.

Trope, 82, a partner in Californian law firm Trope and Trope, has represented big-name stars including Cary Grant, Nicole Kidman, Nicolas Cage and Britney Spears in a 60-year career.

And in another blow to Woods, Elin is believed to be planning to file for divorce in California – where the couple have a home – and not Florida, where they live.

Under California law the “no-fault divorce”, introduced in 1970, means there is an equal division of assets and property.

This could mean that any pre-nup agreement Elin signed with the golf star will be torn up.

A source said: “Mr Trope is the best divorce lawyer in the business and the divorce laws in California are much more favourable than most other states.

“Elin can fight for half of what her husband has earned since they were married. And Trope can bust through any pre-nup – he’s done it many times before.”

Last night, when asked if he was representing Woods’ wife as her divorce lawyer, Trope replied: “Not right now.”

Friends say Elin will spend Christmas in Orlando with the couple’s children, daughter Sam Alexis, two, and son Charlie Axel, 10 months, before filing for divorce in the New Year.

As you have noted - our opinions are probably based on our own experiences and those of friends and family members. There’s a lot of anguish out there.

IME; When men & women expect their own marriages to duplicate their parents’ experience - if it was a good one, they are going to be disappointed.

There was a reason for long engagements - to test compatibility and shared values. *Strangers in the Night* is a great song - but a lousy way to pick a partner for life.

Today - having children and raising a family is way low on the list of reasons to marry. Children are almost like designer accessories for the home.

In our present society, men AND women are equally and competitively promiscuous. Sex is a recreational sport of conquests and combinations.

Old men & tight butt teeny boppers.
Cougars and boy toys.
Money and morons.
Celebrities and the sluts that love them.

Pity the progeny from these partnerships.

Well when men get half the boobs after a divorce then it will be even.

LOL! I'm so going to use that next time I have this discussion with anyone. I'll try to give you credit.

I wonder how many of the female posters here claiming that, say, only $40 million is not fair and it is only right that Elin should receive half of Tiger’s fortune in a divorce settlement would feel the same way if a woman’s fortune were at stake?

Take my hypothetical example with the billionaire Oprah.

Say Stedman marries her for a few years followed by the inevitable divorce, and it turns out that Oprah was cheating on him.

Should Stedman in those circumstances receive half of Oprah’s earnings? Say, half a billion dollars should go to Stedman for a few years of marriage?

Or would we be hearing from these posters how Oprah earned all that money herself, Stedman had very little to do it, how unfair for him to take so much of her money, etc.?

Good points!

If Stedman had delivered, by natural childbirth, several minor children during the duration of the marriage; taken care of all domestic challenges, entertained her business associates; put his own career on hold and attended to all her demands. Remained faithful and had no adulterous liasons.

Damn straight!!!!!!

“Today - having children and raising a family is way low on the list of reasons to marry. Children are almost like designer accessories for the home.”

So true.

It really comes down to what people really think “marriage” is all about.

Somewhere along the line the message has become -sex,sex, sex! Status. Fun! Image.
Trying to shape the spouse into something that will make “ME” happy instead of contemplating what “I” can do to make my spouse happy.

Yes - it used to be all about kids, family. Passing on values to the next generation.

Bore children? No one on this thread has suggested that Tiger should not have to provide generous child support.

Is someone suggesting that Elin should receive more of Tiger's fortune, apart from child support obligations, simply because she bore his children? So the reasoning is that she didn't really want those children herself, therefore she should be compensated for bearing his children? Huh?

taken care of all domestic challenges, entertained her business associates; put his own career on hold and attended to all her demands

What? You do realize these people are fabulously wealthy, don't you? They have SERVANTS that do everything for them that normal couples have to do themselves. Elin was not in the kitchen slaving over a hot stove cooking hors d'oeurves for a dinner party to entertain Tiger's boss. And it would be shocking if Elin ever changed a diaper herself.

It depends on the circumstances. Maybe if it were one woman - then you may be able to work through the marriage and if not, then she would be entitled to a “fair” amount. What Tiger did was reckless, selfish, dangerous behavior unbecoming of a world class golf pro. That was some really sleezy behavior. As a wife and mother, I am trying to put myself in Elin’s shoes and what Tiger did is unforgivable and irreparable. IMO

It’s a common theme here at FReerepublic. Women who stay home and care for children are lazy moochers. Women who work and put their kids in daycare are heartless bitches who care nothing for their kids

I was just noticing that. I have no idea what role we're supposed to be playing. But, instead of doing the learning and writing practice I was going to do so I can work from home, I think I should call up the local grocery and find out if they have any bon bons they can deliver before the soaps come on.

sorry, I missed the sarcasm -

However, I would feel differently if we were talking about a 20 year marriage where at the beginning Tiger was a nobody with a 20 handicap, and Elin patiently taught Tiger how to swing a golf club, how to read a green, when it is proper to take a drop, how to wave his cap to adoring crowds as he strolls up the 18th fairway, etc etc

That really WOULD be worth $250 million.

She should sue for 20 million for each woman Tiger has slept with since their engagement.

Actually, I’ll be surprised if the pre-nup doesn’t hold up legally.

But I think Tiger will settle with her out of court for something greater than the pre-nup amount because he was such a cad, but for an amount far less than half his fortune.

If she takes this to court, gets the pre-nup declared void and actually is awarded half his fortune, I’ll be quite surprised.

Tiger would probably have to declare bankruptcy in that case.

Tiger’s not getting much love from Freepers, but at least his celebrity friends still have his back!

“Charles Barkley says Tiger Woods changed his cell phone number the day after his car accident and is not talking to some of his famous friends.

“’You should reach out to your celebrity friends when things go bad,’ Barkley told The Associated Press in a phone interview Tuesday. ‘They’re the only people who understand what it’s like.’”

“’He’s insulated,’ Lee said during the taping for the show. ‘If Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan can’t get to him, and those are his boys, then other people are making bad moves.’

If things go south for me, I definitely plan on turning to my celebrity friends!

Not trying to over-lawyer the situation (but maybe I am ;)) since I am one. I do not condone Tiger’s life and support Elin, but a thinking lawyer would perhaps have Tiger file a pre-emptive strike (divorce) in Florida instanter and prevent the filing in California. Thereby preserving the pre-nup agreement.

Has anyone actually seen the pre-nup?

HA!
Exactly - If we aren’t going to get any credit for what we do - we may as well just eat bon bons right?

Let the kids teach themselves how to grow up into decent human beings all on their own.

If she wants half the money, she should have played and won half the tournaments that Tiger won, instead of him.

She should get half. Tiger exposed her to the possibility of getting a STD by sleeping with all those women.

Elin is endanger from going from a very sympathetic figure to being a gold digger. This is a terrible PR move.

Only in your world.
