Stooges, Genesis, ABBA Get Rock Hall Of Fame Nods
Billboard ^ | December 15, 2009 10:01 EST | Gary Graff,

The Stooges, Genesis, ABBA, the Hollies and Jimmy Cliff will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the shrine's 25th annual ceremony on March 15 at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City. They'll be joined by David Geffen and a cadre of songwriters -- Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, Ellie Greenwich & Jeff Barry, Jesse Stone, Mort Shuman and Otis Blackwell -- who will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award for non-performers.

The ceremony will be broadcast live on Fuse TV.

Surprisingly not making the cut were KISS and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who were thought to be frontrunners when the short list of nominees was announced in September.

Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks tells Billboard.com that the induction is "nice to happen" and that it's an honor to be the second British progressive rock band, after Pink Floyd, to join the Hall. "I suppose it being American-based and all that it just concentrates slightly more on that type of music," he says. Which members of Genesis might perform at the ceremony is somewhat up in the air due to Phil Collins' recent surgery to repair dislocated vertebrae. "Phil's got a few physical problems at the moment which means I don't think he'd be able to play, so...I don't really know what that means," Banks says. "We'll face that particular hurdle when we get to it."

Hollies veteran Graham Nash calls the group's induction "well-deserved," noting that "they were a very large part of the British Invasion. They were a very large part of early, you know, English rock. They had a couple of dozen Top 10 hits (in the U.K.), and hits over here (in the U.S.), and why not?" His longtime colleague Stephen Stills was "so happy" for Nash and cracked that "now he can quit feeling inferior" because Stills and David Crosby have each been inducted into the Hall more than once. But, Stills adds, "I thought (the Hollies) was a great band, and we all wanted to sing like that. The fact I ended up with one of their singers is one of the luckiest things in my life."

ABBA is unlikely to regroup for a performance at the March ceremony, but the Stooges, in the wake of founding guitarist Ron Asheton's death in early January, have already been planning a 2010 tour with "Raw Power" era guitarist James Williamson. The group has been nominated for the Hall seven previous times.

Absolutely rock and roll and more rock and roll than LL Cool J, RUN DMC, Madonna, and ABBA. Have you not listened to their entire catalog? Genesis is indeed a ROCK band.

I love “Supper’s Ready”.

I must admit I prefer Phil's "Seconds Out" version to Peter's.

I don’t get the Phil Collins bashing on this thread? Abacab? Mama? Genesis?

How about these songs...NOT ROCK? Give me a break. They were huge songs for them.

Land of Confusion
No Son of Mine
Home By The Sea
Me and Sarah Jane
Abacab
Keep It Dark
No Reply At All
Paperlate
Just A Job to Do
Turn It On Again
Misunderstanding
Follow You, Follow Me
Domino
Illegal Alien
Mama
Behind The Lines
Home By The Sea
That’s All
Tonight, Tonight, Tonight
In Too Deep
Invisible Touch
Anything She Does
Throwing It All Away
Hold on My Heart
I Can’t Dance
Jesus He Knows Me
Falling Lights

That’s just songs with the post-Gabriel era not including the stuff with Phil and Peter. Those were HUGE hits and are in many cases VERY rocking songs. We haven’t even touched Phil’s solo stuff. The guy has like 40 hits combined with Genesis.

A master drummer and writer and vocalist.

I was introduced to Genesis when The Lamb Lies Down in Broadway.

Tony's synth solos on "In the Cage" and "Riding The Scree" still give me chills. That album was way out there for it's time. Stuff like "Selling England...", etc. are rather dated, but The Lamb still sounds very fresh.

If Madonna, Abba, and Dion are rock while Kiss and Rush are not, then what IS rock? It is completely arbtitrary who gets in and who doesn’t. Calling it a hall of fame is to laugh. Self-appointed arbitors of public taste. The same sort of suits who repeatedly passed on the Beatles because “The guitar group sound is out.”

Look - to be fair, I understand what you are saying here. Personally I think KISS should be in. But SOMEONE or some group HAS to be the arbitor of public taste when it comes to something like this. And until it's you there will be chioces you don't agree with. Same goes for anyone else. It is a private enterprise. We don't get to choose what GM produces. We get to buy what they make - or not.

We can certainly debate the merits of this band or that. But even someone who hates ABBA should be able to look at what they did and when and be able to acknowlege they deserve consideraton for induction (and please, let's not revisit the "it's not "rock" thing" - one perusal of past inductees should cover that). Since the stats that reflect level of accomplishment and success are not open to debate it comes down to subjective judgements.

And here we are - back to that arbitor. That arbitor is still not me or you. If you don't like who is inducted don't buy a ticket. I don't plan to either way. OTOH, I really like the newest MUSE cd - my vote.

I know you’re a bigtime Rush fan, and I could swear the first time I heard “In that Quiet Earth/Unquiet Slumbers for the Sleepers” from Wind and Wuthering, I thought it sounded a heck of a lot like Rush. I’ve got some live bootlegs of them playing it on the ‘77 Tour, and it just rocks, they missed Hackett more than they missed Gabriel.

High holy hell is going to blow up over KISS being passed up here.

I expect Gene Simmons will give 'em a good tongue lashing...

Yeah, and they’re 40 years old and singing to teenagers.

Hard to believe Donnie Walhberg was in "Band of Brothers".

... see Mamma Mia on Broadway - then drove up to Birmingham to see the national tour - saw the movie 4 times

I saw the show on Broadway, in Raleigh (Broadway South Tour), and in the movie theater. I gave the movie a "thumbs down" simply because Meryl Streep, although a great performer, was 15 years too old for the role. The ladies and men were all supposed to be in their early 40s -- not in late 50s!

Meryl Streep didn’t bother me as much as poor old Pierce Brosnan who could not carry a tune in a bucket....at least she could sing....but you’re right....why, oh why would you have these folks in the movie who were just much older then the movie called for....that being said....I loved the play, liked the movie....does that show how old I am! It’s coming to New Orleans in Feb and hopefully will be going to see it YET AGAIN....lol

Wow, I thought Genesis would have it much tougher here on FR. Does no one remember the music video for “Land of Confusion” that endlessly mocked Reagan as a cowboy riding a nuke?

Ahh you know the pop world had to bitch about something and of course they are going to go for the nukes/arm race. Rush did it in Distant Early Warning as well.

Pete said Moon took a hand full of horse tranquilizers and passed out 2-3 songs into the show. They made a general call to the audience, “anyone know how to play the drums?” I don’t know about any episodes of bonzo passing out, although it is entirely possible.
