Sounds like another example of imposing modern angst and mores on the past. I was a bit turned off by the previews and this just confirms it. I found this on another review:
Great, energetic fun! Guy Ritchie is back and delivers a strong, gay romance. McAdams and Reilly are in the way of the bromance. Entire production excellent.

Maybe the movie should be retitled "Brokeback Victorian London".

My understanding is that he original Sherlock Holmes character was a frequent drug user. I think House MD is roughly based on Holmes’ character.

As much as I am looking forward to this movie, I still think no one can do Holmes like Jeremy Brett could.

Why do they have to do this?

Saw the previews last night on the
Terminator Salvation DVD and I thought it looked pretty good.
Guy Ritchie hadn't made a decent film the whole time he was married to Madonna. Hopefully now that they're divorced, she no longer sucks the creative energy from him and this one will return to the entertaining level of Lock, Stock... and Snatch.

Why can't FReepers just enjoy a fricking movie without whining about how gay it is or how leftist it is. Are you going to become indoctrinated after viewing it? How fun would the movie be without the drug usage, the narcissist behavior from Holmes, and the fighting? Holmes was a brawler, he had bad habits and hygiene, and Watson was his right-hand man, so the movie isn't a far departure from Arthur Doyle's original short stories.
People really believe that the 1800s was an idyllic, magical conservative time. Nothing could be further from the truth. The period had just as much homosexuality, prostitution, crime, and drug abuse as now.

Gay Richie, Robert Downey and Jude law.... what a crock!
I'll stick with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.

It’s the action sequences that are probably going to keep me away from this movie. Holmes as a druggie is actually from the books, and his relationships were weird in the books too. But those big fight scenes are just outside the realm of Holmes.

Posting two weeks later, after having gone and seen the movie: I can only figure the reviewer was aiming to sabotage this Sherlock Holmes movie by saying it is a "strong gay romance." That is a downright lie on the part of whoever wrote it, and because I believed it (at first) I darned near missed what turned out to be one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. It had a good message and emphasized the right values. To wit: There's a storm coming; stay cool and deal with it.
The movie "Sherlock Holmes" is straight entertainment and worth seeing -- the only people upset will be Sherlock Holmes purists. The overall story and moral is very true to the spirit of Conan Doyle's Holmes stories (I've read them all many times), though it is racy in a way that would have repulsed the old Victorian. Yet even the raciness in this movie is done with light and nicely done humor.
I recommend the movie.
