Nike: Tiger Woods Affairs Are A 'Minor Blip' [To Hell With Consumers?]

Nike: Tiger Woods Affairs Are A 'Minor Blip' Tiger Woods's multiple infidelities have been dismissed as a "minor blip" by the chairman of Nike, the golfer's biggest commercial sponsor.

By Tom Leonard in New York 14 Dec 2009

The chairman of Nike has dismissed Tiger Woods affairs as a 'minor blip' Phil Knight, the co-founder of the sports footwear and clothing giant, said the scandal surrounding Woods's private life was "part of the game" in endorsement deals. But he acknowledged that his company's checks on the sports star's suitability had failed to uncover evidence of serial philandering.

Mr Knight, whose company marketed its golf range almost entirely around Woods, made his comments the day after consulting company Accenture announced it had ended its relationship with the player.

"Obviously, he was one we checked out and he came out clean, and I think he's been really great," Mr Knight told SportsBusiness Journal. "When his career is over, you'll look back on these indiscretions as a minor blip, but the media is making a big deal out of it right now."

Woods's status as the world first billionaire sportsman is based largely on lucrative endorsement deals. As attention moved to the financial consequences of the scandal, another major sponsor, the Swiss watch maker Tag Heuer, said yesterday that it was standing by him. A company spokesman said Woods, 33, was "the best in his domain", adding that his personal problems were "not our business".

It came as an eleventh woman was named yesterday as one of Woods's alleged lovers and the golfer faced new claims that he had paid more than £3 million to buy the silence of a former nightclub hostess.

I agree with Mr. Knight.
Flame as you wish; but IMO its been an over-blown soap opera from the start. The philandering of Woods has been a 'well-known secret' since approximately day 1.
Why hasn't the righteous outrage been directed towards those who have enabled this to continue for so many years?

I'll venture that its because of proximity to Woods' fame and the financial rewards reaped by the enablers who made up this circle.

So Tiger boinked out of his marriage...so what?
He's a friggin professional athlete (well OK, a golfer) to set him up as a role model for fidelity and integrity is a losing proposition from the git-go.

Like I said, I agree with Mr. Knight that its just bidness as usual...You win some - You lose some...The trick is to just hang in and keep bangin' away. Its bidness...nothing more.

Weird stuff

Wonder if some lefties have been deliberately publishing partial BS stuff to muddy the waters and make all critics less credible

It seems to be an old story that was circulated in October. Snopes said it was false.

With that I’ll just slink off to bed.

It looks like the sign says "Go Jags" in the corner. Was this at a Jaguars NFL game?

Too Funny.

Please! You think the ...erm ...'Amish' ( I guess the dark skinned variety ...or is it the Hispanic variety this week on FR) are te main buyers of Nike products. That they are the main buyers of golf related merchandise. I'm certain they surely must be the main purchasers of the higher end Tag watches as well that Tiger hawks, as well as the majority buyers of Higher end Buicks and Escalades.

Or maybe these 'Amish' who are giving Tiger the pass are middle aged white males who are the core target demographic of the Tiger marketing angle, and in business speak have a high stickiness aspect and a level of discretionary spend that will almost asertain that once this scandals abate the sponsors will come back to Tiger with even bigger deals due to his monetization factor, just as they came back when that rapist cum cheater Kobe Bryant's case got forgotten. In that case, as well, the target PAYING market was not the darker Amish varieties but the lighter skinned varieties that are the main people watching - actual ticket holding core fans- watching games at the courts. Wrong Amish FRiend

Roger that. It would probably take an OJ type deal for them to officially pull out.

Tiger is still a choir boy by Nike standards.
