Woman recovering from pit bull attack

TAMPA - From her hospital bed at St. Joseph's in Tampa, Kelly Doxsey showed what happened to her upper arm after a pit bull attack back in Nov. 23.

That's when she says she and her 7-year-old niece, Karoline McQueary, were walking on a sidewalk along Wood Lake Boulevard in Town 'N Country area.

Doxsey was walking her small dog, named Scrappy. "As soon as I turned my back, I heard the fence splinter" she said.

Next, she said a large pit bull walked toward them. "When he leapt at my throat, I put my arm up there and he grabbed ahold of it and he was just shaking me around like a rag doll," Doxsey said.

After a time, the dog let go, but only for a moment. Doxsey said the dog began to growl and put his head down. "I thought, oh my God, and so I kinda grabbed him by his head, and shook him and shoved my arm back in his mouth to keep him focused on me" instead of her niece, she said.

Soon, somebody inside the house where the dog was kept opened the front door, which prompted the pit bull to go inside.

An ambulance took Doxsey to the hospital where she has undergone several surgeries to repair the damage.

A spokesperson from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said they cited a man who claimed to be "dog sitting."

Hillsborough Animal Services spokesperson, Marti Ryan said the dog, named Pablo, was euthanized.

Here’s a question, would you want to piss off a Grandma willing to stick her arm in a pit bulls mouth?

never heard of a cocker spaniel doing this, or a boxer, or collie, or poodle, or great dane. Some dogs seem to be born mean.

The dog of peace strikes again...Thats obvious to everyone except pit bull owners or pit lovers...their dogs are sweet and gentle and would never bite anyone. Its the owners fault....or else they blame the victim. Must be democrats in disguise..Everyone is at fault except the useless dog......kinda disgusting.

Actually, those who argue AGAINST the owner being responsible or AGAINST human responsibility are much more akin to dems in their views.... and yes, actually there ARE stories about other breeds/types of dogs attacking. ANY dog can attack.

Exactly. Astonishing how many here have no clue that ANY dog can bite. Thanks for the post.

It is true that (some) of the owners are at fault, but in many cases, its not the owner, but the breed and what they were bred for, for generations...That is to be vicious, attack don't let go and if possible kill. Which they have done many times..

There have been stories of pit (sweet and loving) bulls suddenly turning on the owner or some child in the family..They usually say there dog is so sweet and has never bitten anyone before...

Any dog can bite, but the majority of victims that need to be hospitalize to get their faces put together are the victims of pits...Each county keeps track of vicious dog bites and Pit and Rotty's are responsible for 80 per cent of such attacks...Its not the owner, its the breeds. Unless only 20% are responsible keepers of the breed..

When one considers the large amount of other breeds, and how many dogs are actually pets, Pits are disproportionally responsible..the breed is nasty, even with a responsible dog owner. Yet I have never read of one owner that owns up to the viciousness of Pits and Rotty"s.

At least with Rotties, they are a beautiful dog, pits just plane ugly dogs even when puppies..Sorry for the long post, but I am not a defender of the indefensable

I don’t think they are viscous as that implies evil. They are a very strong animal that requires a stronger owner. most owners are not able to train or manage this breed adequately.

Someone like the Dog Whisperer can handle these animals most of the time. You have to be able to pick up on the subtle behaviors that provide warning. Even he misses the warnings sometimes with this breed though.

We have two in our neighborhood now. The owners run them daily but now I cannot let my kids over in their area. If they get loose I will shoot them.

Actually, you DON’T read about those owned by responsible owners because those are not what the media reports. They do not distinguish between “family dog” and “resident dog” although there is all of the difference in the world between the two: the former being a dog which is spayed or neutered, socialized, brought into the home, fed and vetted regularly and NEVER left outside, chained up. Resident dogs, of course, are just what the name implies: intact, chained, not socialized, fed or vetted. But it makes much better press to speak of the “family dog that suddenly went rogue and bit its loving family”. Irresponsible owners and irresponsible media: they make a great tag-team.

As for your opinion on their beauty, many find them precious. You are free to your views on that as beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

You have my sympathy with having one of the* tweet little doggies of peace* in your neighborhood, I'd shoot one if it was running loose in my neighborhood also...

I have seen some nasty dog fights between pits on the Dog Whisper show....I remember one that he had a hold of one and someone else had hold of the 2nd dog, they couldn't pry them apart or pull them apart...

He then used a maneuver that I was taught as a kid to get a dog to release their bite, Its taking the back of the lower lip and turning it over the teeth and press hard. That causes any dog to let go and it made the pit Ceasar was dealing with let go of the other dog...

When I was a kid, when my dad brought home the first dog I remember, he showed me how to do that..

He knew any dog had the ability to bite, and sometimes they might not let go....He was an old farm boy that was a Mounted Police man for the city of Detroit..

I don't understand the mentality of the breeds defenders they seem to be deaf, dumb and blind to what these animals can do. And its never the breed, its the owner or the victims fault to them..skulls thick as a pit bull.

There was one article about a pit attacking a 3 year old and these people said it wasn't the dogs fault, he was just protecting his property.. There is a ding in the thought process of some of these people. They are not worth talking to, Stay safe......GG

I had never heard that trick before, thanks.

a .45 or .357 might work better for this breed though.

Your way is quite good also...and permanent..

If you have a dog, try it, if it has nothing in its mouth, you just have to slightly open the mouth so you can get to the back teeth..and turn the bottom lip over the back teeth. The dog will open its mouth. The pressure needs to be very firm, but not hard enough to cause the skin to break...I have used it to get a dog to drop something he has in his mouth that he shouldn't. Have a great week end...GG
