What's blue and white, squiggly and suddenly appears in the sky?
If you know the answer, pop it on a postcard and send it to the people of Norway, where this mysterious light display baffled residents yesterday.
Curiously, it appears to be unconnected with the aurora borealis, or northern lights, the natural magnetic phenomena that can often be viewed in that part of the world.
. . .
The mystery began when a blue light seemed to soar up from behind a mountain in the north of the country. It stopped mid-air, then began to move in circles. Within seconds a giant spiral had covered the entire sky. Then a green-blue beam of light shot out from its centre - lasting for ten to 12 minutes before disappearing completely.
Onlookers describing it as 'like a big fireball that went around, with a great light around it' and 'a shooting star that spun around and around'.
The Norwegian Meteorological Institute was flooded with telephone calls after the light storm.
. . .
Totto Eriksen, from Tromsø, told VG Nett: 'It spun and exploded in the sky,'
He spotted the lights as he walked his daughter Amalie to school.
He said: 'We saw it from the Inner Harbor in Tromsø. It was absolutely fantastic.
'It almost looked like a rocket that spun around and around and then went diagonally down the heavens.
'It looked like the moon was coming over the mountain, but then came something completely different.'
Celebrity astronomer Knut Jørgen Røed Ødegaard said he had never seen anything like the lights.
He said: 'My first thought was that it was a fireball meteor, but it has lasted far too long.
'It may have been a missile in Russia, but I can not guarantee that it is the answer.'

Interesting. I can’t tell if the blue spiral thing is going up or down, man-made or natural.
The most astonishing aspect of this is that the blue corkscrew beam came out of the spiral cloud, not the ground, according to observers.
Seeing the pictures at the original article, I assumed that it was the other way around - that the blue light emanated from the ground, and then the gray spiral formed around it. That would seem to indicate a ground-based origin, and provide some framework of logic to explain it.
As it is, this is completely unexplainable. Fascinating phenomenon, to say the least.
...or maybe God is telling us that we are being screwed by the "one".
In some of the videos it looked like the blue spiral was trailing the white spiral as it moved. Different perspectives perhaps.
However, if it was sunlight causing part of the effect - the sunlight would hit the higher part of the blue spiral first and as the sun rose the blue spiral would become illuminated more towards the ground. Making it look like the blue “light” was starting at the white spiral and going downwards.
That’s an awfully big coincidence, don’t you think - especially considering there aren’t any coincidences. My hoax-o-meter just went off the charts.
I just looked at three videos, and they all look as though this occurred at night. Where would the sunlight have been coming from? Atmospheric refraction?
If someone hoaxed this, they've beat Hollywood to hell and gone.
This thing took up a rather large chunk of the sky, and had a corkscrew blue light emanating out of it. Just how do you make light corkscrew?
It also began as a very small spiral and enlarged to gargantuan size before the blue light came out of it.
Want to venture any theories as to how this was done?
From the video it looks like somebody put a black light in a search light and put an lcd over the top that was playing a winamp-type visualization.
Well with thousands of observers, photos and video from multiple sources the HoaxOmeter is useless on this one. No way anyone could have pulled off a Hoax like this.
Someone commented about the blue spiral, I saw it but never thought about the complexity of making a blue light spiral like that...and if it did emanate from the sky and not from the ground that even makes it more weird.
It would be real comfortable to just say somebody did a good job with Photoshop...but can’t do that with this one. May just have to accept the fact that things happen we just do not understand and cannot explain. Maybe ET decided to start making “sky circles” since the crop circles did not adequately get our attention...

This is a link to a series of several photos. (It was linked in one of the earlier FR threads).
One person said it happened from 7:30 to 8:00 A.M. In the photos near the horizon you can see the sun rising in the background. The higher-up photos are very dark. I wish they had a time sequence of the photos. The blue plume in the sunlight photos is just a hazy plume (no spiral).
I’m still leaning towards the out-of-control rocket theory - but lots of flaws in that it would seem. Mainly the perfect spirals. But, the photo sequence does tend to support a rocket.
This link from that site says rocket/missile.

Canary Islands.

Maybe if we see a double, we will know what the creators of the spiral petroglyphs saw?
Or a triple, as at Newgrange?
It’s caused by global warming. The spiral is an SUV heat vortex and the blue ray is the result of mixing CO2 with the screams of dying polar bears.
Surprisingly, comets do not always appear as sweeping brooms in the sky. When viewed at the correct angle and orientation, while the comet is outgassing appropriately, a comet can actually appear as a spiral "pinwheel." Below are some photos and a short movie of comet Hale-Bopp in 1997 when it was in spiral display.
I'm leaning toward a electrical plasma caused phenomena... and I think it has been seen beforeand much more frequently, in ancient mythology when it was called Bifrost, the bridge of the gods.
