Just got a call (here at work) from a telemarketer with a private number concerning "our local and long distance telephone provider" - I hung up as I always do. The woman called back 3 minutes later and said the following: "Now your getting your services changed bitch!" and hung up.
You would be surprised how many legitimate calls these pest are blocking from your business.
Do not just hang up. Instead, calmly and politely tell them to add your number(s) to their Do Not Call list. If they persist calling you after that let them talk enough to figure out who they are and tell them are going to file a complaint with the FTC and you are keeping a record of their calls to present to the court if they don't stop calling.
Some of these folks will say you're rude for wanting to simply regain control of the phone line you pay for. Pay them no mind, it is they who are being rude, calling not for your services or products, but to hawk their own.
With some patience, and some electronics you can regain your phone line and your sanity.
