CHOKOLOSKEE CHICKEN
self | DECEMBER 07, 2009 | swampsniper

In a particular part of Florida the White Ibis is known as the Chokoloskee Chicken. There is at least one FREEPER near Chokoloskee, they are a wild and rowdy bunch down there!

North Florida FREEPERS, on the other hand, are genteel and cultivated!

It's cloudy, wet and windy. Everything is hunkered down and waiting out the weather. The onshore wind has pushed the water way up in the marsh and the birds are hanging out on little islands.

Where I come from “choking the chicken” has a completely different meaning...

Thanks for the pics. As a native Floridian, I sometimes take these sights for granted. But you do them justice.

I was over in Everglades City a month or so ago, fishing. I like it over there, beautiful country. Saw a lot of alligators and caught a few fish.

Floridians are some of the friendliest people I’ve encountered in my travels. As always I enjoy your birding threads.

Does the Chicken name relate to the legs? They do look a bit like those of a chicken.

I love the Everglades, too! And I thank you, Swampsniper for bringing me a slice of them every now and then.

(Especially when it’s 10 degrees in the Rockies.)

Beautiful!

Lots of pioneer types eat them but the government doesn’t like it!

Years ago, I lived in Naples and am familiar with Chokoloskee. I visited the old general store and post office when it was still being run by the sisters.

The grandfather of a friend told me of seeing, as a young teen, the notorious Mr. Watson alive in a boat in Chokoloskee after his capture in the Ten Thousand Islands. Watson was dead by the time he arrived at the courthouse in Everglades City, killed because his captors were fearful of Watson's vengeance.
