Billy Joel's daughter overdoses, in hospital

Billy Joel’s 23-year-old daughter was rushed to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan today after allegedly ingesting a large number of sleeping pills in what police consider a suicide attempt, The Post has learned.

Medics were called to Alexa Ray Joel’s apartment at 19 Bethune St. apartment in the West Village at approximately 12:21 p.m. this afternoon, sources told The Post. The 911 call came from a roommate who reported that Joel had taken too many sleeping pills, sources said.

Joel was conscious at St. Vincent’s Hospital, and is expected to survive. Joel is the only daughter of piano man Billy Joel and his supermodel wife, Christie Brinkley. Brinkley and Joel married in 1984, and divorced in 1994.

A prolific songwriter since her young teens, Alexa Joel is also a talented pianist and singer. She’s among several celebrities scheduled to appear in a tree-lighting ceremony at the New York Stock Exchange this Thursday.

My first thought upon reading this is that Billy Joel said that Frankie Valli was an early influence for him. After seeing Jersey Boys, I learned that Valli lost a daughter to a cocaine overdose when she was young.

I hope the pattern doesn't repeat for Joel.

As for ‘priveldged life’, he was just getting by up until his mid 20s.

This from her mySpace page:

I don't like dating!!! Wish I could be in a relationship again without having to date... I HATE going out!! I'm a homebody and a workaholic... I don't like going out and drinking to meet men!!! I always have to drag myself out the door to get up the motivation to go out, and when I do go out, I don't meet anybody!!!," she wrote in an Aug. 11 post.

"Is anybody else finding it a difficult "dating world" out there? I'm so terrible at dating-- I don't know if I'll ever get used to it! And I HATE the game-playing! Can't stand it. I live in the greatest city in the world and I can't seem to meet an interesting guy who also happens to be NICE."

Pretty sad. She ought to reconsider where she goes to meet guys (and consider that maybe she's seen the best of Manhattan).....

Growing in a single parent home was probably unusual in the 1950s.

&&&
It was indeed. The term “broken home” was whispered with a wince about such children. Now, there are so many children subjected to divorce and its unpleasant aftermath. So sad.

I didn’t know that. It sure doesn’t come across that way in the song. Was that in an interview? Had someone asked him about ut? That is interesting.

If Billy Joel is a musical genius, then what is Mozart, Beethoven, Bach? When you set the bar that low it's easy to achieve genius status.

Billy Joel is/was a musical hack. Listen to "Piano Man" and try to convince yourself that it was worth the $5 you shelled out for it when you found it in the bargain bin.

A pop genius. So is Paul McCartney, Wilson and Benny Anderson from ABBA. None of them are on the level of Bach and Mozart either. That’s a silly objection. The ‘Piano Man’ album is mediocre early work that doesn’t even sound like him. Why judge an artist by their weakest work? When he got going he wrote a grab bag of standards...’NY State of Mind’, ‘Allentown’...

Alexa isn't near as pretty or as tall as her famous Mother. That's got to leave a mark.

That said, I hope she survives and finds true love. And that would be quite an achievement considering her parents are both messed up.

Billy Joel is a magnificent musical genius. As far as those other three guys you mentioned?
Bor - ing...
I couldn’t name two songs by any of them.

Sorry, Billy Joel isn't fit to be mentioned in the same breath as Paul McCartney or Brian Wilson.

Maybe Benny Andersson. Their music will be forgotten as soon as their tone deaf fans die. They both achieved fame far beyond their level of talent. They were both extremely popular for a short amount of time and, at least in the case of Joel, have overstayed their welcome in the public eye.

I mentioned "Piano Man" because it is one of his signature works. A piece of music that he is famous for. It is schmaltzy crap and typical of the rest of his music.

Brian Wilson: Overrated. Basically an update of the Four Freshmen with better songwriting (courtesy B. Wilson). I respect him as a songwriter, but don't believe he belongs in the pantheon.

Billy Joel: Prime period (1973-1980) underrated, everything since 1986 has been crap.

Lennon and McCarthy were outstanding songwriters with the Beatles, with Lennon's solo work very mediocre. As for Macca, his work with Wings (up to Venus and Mars) holds up surprisingly well.

That says far more about your level musical sophistication and taste than it does about Billy Joel's "music". I suppose you think James Brown was a great dancer.

This is a perfect example of the decline of Western civilization.

I hate to break it to you but that song doesn’t sound anything like the rest of his music. Not remotely. It’s a fluke novelty song. His best music has the melodic and harmonic sophistication of the best Tin Pan Alley pop. I’m a Classically trained musician and can back up my assertion with examples if you want. Do you think Leonard Bernstein and Paul McCartney were tone deaf? They both liked his music quite a bit. So did Brian Wilson. So did Ray Charles. All tone deaf no doubt.

As for popularity, Joel sold out Shea Stadium last year and has as many teenage fans as any artist of his generation. Just look at all the covers on Youtube.

And ABBA is more popular now than ever. They produced perfect pop records. What qualities do you expect in pop music that they lacked?

‘Stormfront’ and ‘River of Dreams’ weren’t that bad! And that classical album was respectable.
