Billy Joel’s 23-year-old daughter was rushed to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan today after allegedly ingesting a large number of sleeping pills in what police consider a suicide attempt, The Post has learned.

Medics were called to Alexa Ray Joel’s apartment at 19 Bethune St. apartment in the West Village at approximately 12:21 p.m. this afternoon, sources told The Post. The 911 call came from a roommate who reported that Joel had taken too many sleeping pills, sources said.

Joel was conscious at St. Vincent’s Hospital, and is expected to survive. Joel is the only daughter of piano man Billy Joel and his supermodel wife, Christie Brinkley. Brinkley and Joel married in 1984, and divorced in 1994.

A prolific songwriter since her young teens, Alexa Joel is also a talented pianist and singer. She’s among several celebrities scheduled to appear in a tree-lighting ceremony at the New York Stock Exchange this Thursday.

Alexa Ray Joel Making Of Invisible

They say it doesn’t matter
This love is in my mind
We never got it right, anyway

They say I’m doin’ better
I should be feelin’ fine...

But this pain is growing
And though I keep on going
I don’t feel that I’m OK
Cause each time you walk away—
I’m still tryin’ to fight it...

I am not invisible
No, I’m not invisible
But you make me feel that way
You won’t let yourself see me

And when you find me standing there
Will you pretend you’re not aware
I’m the girl you broke in two
So I can’t say—
A single word to you...

You say you’re movin’ on, now
I gotta let it go
And this is not healthy anymore

And I should understand you
You’re so logical
But I just don’t hear you—
Cause if I can’t be near you—
Nothin’ ever feels OK—
And I’ve tried to walk away,
But it’s not in me to fight it

I am not invisible
No, I’m not invisible
But you make me feel that way
You won’t let yourself see me

And when you find me standing there
Will you pretend you’re not aware
I’m the girl you broke in two...

And you can watch me close the door
Cause I’m not broken anymore
The only thing that’s plain to see
Is you’ve become invisible to me...

I am not invisible
No, I’m not invisible

Why wouldn’t you think of her as Joel’s daughter?

He had an unpleasant childhood. Growing in a single parent home was probably unusual in the 1950s.

How is Joel an ‘attention ho’? He’s quite private actually.

Crud, I remember when she was born. I hope she gets the help she needs and can go on to have a happy and constructive life.

Nothing surprising here Billy Joel was suicidal himself. They should have known based on their family history that this was a potential problem.

Someone close to me fishes out of Montauk and happens to have his boat at the same marina as BJ.

He runs into BJ several times a season ...tells me that he always finds BJ affable and quick with a joke ... but has never, over the years, ever once seen him sober.

Billy is such an extraordinary talent, and I know nothing of his daughter, but hope that they can find their way out of this morass they are in.

Ah...that explains a lot.

And probably had to practice the piano when everyone else was playing baseball.

Just like me. But I’m not mean. And I don’t write nasty songs about Catholics either! ha ha ha.

“Billy himself struggled with depression as did Christie...”

Christmas-time is really bad for some people. You start remembering the the people that have passed and how you miss them and how you could have done things differently.

For people who suffer from depression this time is the worst in my opinion.

Imagine being young, pretty, rich - and wanting to be dead.

What a horror. I hope she goes on to a happy productive life. She must not have done too much charity work around people whose lives really do suck.

It’s not a nasty song! The narrator is a sleazy teenager and the girl keeps her honor.

Joel married his business manager, Elizabeth Weber Small, on September 5, 1973. She was the former wife of his music partner, Jon Small, in the short-lived band Attila. They divorced on July 20, 1982, though he kept her on as his business manager, a move that would prove to be a mistake, according to his Behind the Music interview, as her brother, Frank Weber, embezzled almost all of Joel’s savings.

Joel married Christie Brinkley on March 23, 1985. Their daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, was born December 29, 1985. Alexa was given the middle name of Ray after Ray Charles, one of Joel’s musical idols. Joel and Brinkley divorced on August 25, 1994, although the couple remain friendly.

On October 2, 2004, Joel married 23-year-old Katie Lee. At the time of the wedding, Joel was 55. Joel’s daughter, Alexa Ray, then 18, served as maid-of-honor. Joel’s second wife, Christie Brinkley, attended the union and gave the couple her blessing. Lee works as a restaurant correspondent for the PBS show, George Hirsch: Living it Up!. In 2006, Katie Lee hosted Bravo’s Top Chef. She did not return for a second season, instead going on tour with her husband. She now has a weekly column in Hamptons Magazine, and is a field correspondent for the entertainment television show Extra. On June 17, 2009, both confirmed that they have split after five years of marriage. After the split, he was seen with Canadian beauty Krystle Luther. She was recently spotted with Marilyn Manson’s guitarist Jeordie White aka Twiggy Ramirez, prompting speculation that she was not romantically involved with Joel.

******

In 1982, Brinkley had a romantic relationship with Olivier Chandon de Brailles (born September 17, 1955 in France), heir to the Moët-Chandon Champagne fortune. The two met at Studio 54 in New York City at a party promoting a calendar in which Brinkley appeared. Chandon died a year later on March 2, 1983 in an auto-race car crash during a private pre-season practice session.

Christie Brinkley married four times:

French artist Jean-François Allaux (born in Rabat, Morocco), (1973–1981).

Billy Joel (William Joseph Martin Joel, born May 9, 1949 in Bronx, New York), (1985–1994).[23] Brinkley and Joel met in 1983 on the Island of St. Barts, in the Caribbean. Joel and Brinkley were married on March 23, 1985 on a yacht on the Hudson River and this was the second marriage for both. Joel was 35 and Brinkley 31 and took their vows in a private ceremony attended by 175 family members and friends, including Paul Simon and the Straycats Band.

Real estate developer Richard Taubman (born 1948), (1994–1995). Brinkley and Taubman met in 1994 when a mutual friend introduced them. He proposed to her in May, 1994 although she and Billy Joel were still married. They were married on December 22, 1994 in Telluride, Colorado near the area where they were both in a helicopter crash in March, 1994. Brinkley was 40 years old and Taubman 46 and she announced at their wedding that they were expecting a baby boy.

Peter Halsey Cook (born January 1, 1959, New Jersey), an architect (1996-2008). Cook and Brinkley first met in 1979 when he was modeling, and had their paths cross a few times after that. But at their re-introduction later by mutual friend, NBC’s Jill Rappaport and announced their engagement in August 1996. They married on September 21, 1996 a ranch in Bridgehampton, New York. Brinkley was 42 and Cook 37. They had nearly 120 guests at their wedding including Billy Joel.

Don’t get me wrong, BJ is a extraordinary talent.

But if you listen carefully to his lyrics, there is a definite undercurrent of contemptuousness and meanness that percolates under the surface nearly all the time. This is really evident in “Only The Good Die Young”, “Big Shot”, “Moving Out” and many others from that era. I can only imagine that a person of his genius, with such a rapier-like wit and talent with words, coupled with depression and exacerbated by alcohol, could really destroy a person in an argument.

That is why growing with him would be an ordeal, I would think. Unless he is TOTALLY different from his music!

That is just pure conjecture on your part.

His parents didn't divorce until 1960. He had a Julliard instructor for a piano teacher. He has lived a privileged life. His music is schmaltzy junk and he was pushed ahead of many more talented musicians by the record company. He ended up marrying a supermodel.

Boo-hoo. I'm depressed. Poor baby!

“It’s not a nasty song! The narrator is a sleazy teenager and the girl keeps her honor.”

OF COURSE that is the way you and I would interpret the song because you and I appreciate the girl keeping her honor! LOL!

But the way the song is presented mocks Catholic girls for keeping their honor. It does not admire them for it.

WE DO!

His father left the family in the mid 1950s. Joel is a musical genius who’s was admired by Leonard Bernstein, Irving Berlin, Paul McCartney, Pete Townsend and Brian Wilson. He’s written some of the most enduring pop standards of the last 35 years. Songs that will be around long after we’re gone.

Wow, Alexa’s 23 already? I feel old. I remember when Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley met!

So sad, and I hope she gets better. It seems she inherited her dad’s addictive nature.
