Geology Picture of the Week, Nov. 29 - Dec. 5: Quest for Ship Rock

So I saw this scene, and I wondered -- can I find Ship Rock at this resolution? (Click the little picture to see the full-size 250m resolution image, which is about 5 MB, if that's a problem.)

Turns out that I could. Can you? Here's Ship Rock from the ground; a place I'd like to visit someday. Likewise click for full-size.

Now, here's another volcanic feature that's also in the image; on my last flight to the West Coast, I flew over it.

I use to drive by Shiprock once a week, when I was working in Utah.

I have seen it from all sides.

shiprock2

You can't get very close by road.In this picture you can barely see it.

shiprock

This is a close up shot I made from the same area, heading east into Shiprock New Mexico on I-64. My advice : fly or hike in.

My company does business with the City of Farmington, NM. We have been to Shiprock, Mesa Verde, Hovanweep and several other sites around there. I love Northern New Mexico - nice country, good folks.

Shiprock is sacred to the Navajo.

Been to all those and more, we use find unknown(at least unknown to some) ruins all over the Navajo reservation.

I used to get up and watch the sun come up over Sleeping Ute.
