Alex P. Keaton's TV mom on "Family Ties" is gay.
That's what actress Meredith Baxter told this week's People magazine.
"I'm a lesbian mom," Baxter, who played Elyse Keaton on the popular 1980s sitcom, told the magazine. "I feel like I'm being honest for the first time."
Baxter, 62, said she started dating women several years ago, but before that, being gay "had never crossed my mind."
Baxter said three failed marriages led to several difficult years in her life.
"I was never comfortable with myself," she said. "That doesn't mean I was questioning."
The actress says she is in a long-term relatioship with contractor Nancy Locke, and that her five kids all know, and support her.

I was thinking the same thing. My mom is 61 and looks easily 10 years younger then this woman. She grew up in CA, so it’s not like she avoided the sun.
liberals never do, their lifestyle always is written on their faces and they usually look 20 years older because of it.
She does not look 82...lol.
I will never understand how a woman could give up men to be w/another woman. I couldn’t;I like men WAY too much!
Scene: Chef drives with Cartman in the front seat and the boys in back, with an unconscious Mephesto in the rear of Chef's station wagon.
CARTMAN: “Is he awake yet?”
KYLE: “He's bleeding pretty bad back here.”
CHEF: “Don't let him bleed on my Meredith Baxter Birney memorial towel.”
KYLE: “What's a Meredith Baxter Birney Memorial towel?”
CHEF: “I actually was with Meredith Baxter Birney in this very car, and afterwards, we used that towel to... Wait a minute, why am I telling you this?”
What I'm adding has absolutely no relevance whatsoever, but once I was in line behind Michael Gross at the Jackalope in Santa Fe. The clerk handed him his credit card slip to sign, and I happened to be glancing that way as he signed it. He was hands down the fastest signature writer I have ever seen - way, way under one second. I don't know if you could read it or not, but I was very impressed with his speed.
My mom is 86 and has fewer wrinkles.
It’s like grandma coming out!
God bless her!
Always knew he was a lib but it was still good acting for him to play “right wing gun nut” Burt Gummer and not make him too much a parody of what people think we are. He was usually the hero in the later Tremors movies and TV series.
Heck, it's probably Katie Couric now before she goes through makeup.
Ohmigosh, i amlaughingso hard.
After the Surrender speech last night, I needed that.
Meredith honey, there are worse things than being alone. Find something else to do with your time other than trying to get laid.
Well said.
You're funny AND wise.
She has been one big wrinkle for 20 years. I think she has the same “wrinkle gene” as Robert Redford.
“Baxter, 62, said she started dating women several years ago, but before that, being gay “had never crossed my mind.”
WAIT A MINUTE.... I thought you were supposedly BORN that way?
Yeah...
Indeed! Not much left of her mental capacities unfortunately, but she has loved the Lord all her life.
Hollywood is such a weird place. I have a relative who has been trying to make it out there for a few years. After his time out there, he has some stories about ‘celebs’ that are just...wow...
According to him, most are just bizarre, lonely people who are desperate for attention.
Hey, has anyone told Kelly about John ?
I forgot Whitney Blake was her mother. She created “One Day At A Time” in the ‘70s.
Well, some people like clams, some people like sausage. I like clams, and apparently, so does Miss Baxter. But I ain’t female.
Well, at least you know Mike ain’t gay.
