Someone has given us a lot of ground deer meat. I'm storing it in the freezer, of course.
I'd like to feed some of it to our Golden Retriever with his regular kibble.
Is it necessary to cook it, or would it be safe to feed it to him raw? We've fed BilJac raw meat to our dogs in the past, so I'm thinking raw is OK.
Exactly Star Traveler! If the kind of crap they pull into the yard (we live on mountain and they roam acres of forests in the day) hasn’t killed them, some processed deer meat won’t hurt.
Heck, just the other day I was asking what died in our yard only to find a deer leg they had been nawing on. An entire leg! Hair, hoof and all! And good LORD at the smell!
Years back I would have felt the same way about goose meat. Now the damn things are all over the place. I think it is the same with deer; there are so darn many of them in the suburban areas that they are like rats. If you want to call meat from a small doe shot with an arrow in a suburb after it just got done lunching on someone’s small patch of vegetables expensive game meat; that is near as insane as driving 150 miles to call geese in on decoys then dodging them in the street when you get near your suburban home.
I still remember their faces....
I have a golden and this time of year he always brings home deer organs and puts them near my front door. They are rotten and nasty and I know he ate some before sharing it with me. He some times throws it back up (lovely I know) but does not have any health problems from it.
It is not hunting season yet but a neighbor does it anyway. He guts it and leaves the rest in the woods.
I am learning about deer anatomy though.
Some call it Venison.
I still remember their faces....
Oh yeah, I can imagine... LOL...
I’ll eat it! - raw, cooked, on the hoof .....
You must have a Beagle/Basset..
If you’re worried, it will only take you a couple minutes to brown it in a frying pan.
You could have fried it in the amount of time you posted this thread. The dog would probably like the fried crust too...
My dumb dogs smelled deer puke a half mile away and ran to eat it. Damn dogs... GRRRR!
Most likey it is safe to feed them raw. However, why take the chance ? Cook it in a pan on the stove. That way they are less likey to get sick as in diarrhea. Trust me there is nothing worse than waking up to dog diarrhea in the morning. Also, start with a small quantity in their kibble to see how their digestive system reacts to the change in food.
The Beagle Breeder
We’ve been feeding bones and raw food (BARF) to our blue heeler for 12 years. We now also feed it to our five year old dachshund. They usually get raw chicken quarters in the morning and kibble in the evening and marrow bones on the weekends. The dachshund we’ve only had for six months. The heeler is in great shape. Plays, chases things, has fantastic teeth. And the poop is small and degrades quickly. But I would be afraid of raw deer meat because of the wasting disease thingie. Or raw pork. We only feed raw chicken, beef, and lamb. NO COOKED BONES.
Hope I haven’t left anyone out. Thank you all for your suggestions.
I can’t eat all of it in the next 12 months, which is about the longest meat for people should be frozen, and I certainly don’t want it to be wasted, so the dog will get some of it.

Buy dog kibble, then take the dear meat, cut in strips along the grain, marinade in honey, garlic and red pepper, place on sheet pans and bake at 200 degrees until it looks like jerky!
I’d cook it to be on the safe side.
Our late, Golden Retriever, Prior Lake Jake, had a taste for Kleenex and TP. He would sniff out a tissue in my wife’s pocket and woof it down. He also liked to take a bite out of the TP roll which made it kind of tricky to use...
Our Boston gets in the liter box occasionally. Our (flame point Siamese)is named Gump, so we say Betty has been eating "Gump lumps" when she has the tell tale breath. As long as you treat your dogs for worms (including heart worms), raw meat will do them good. A dog will throw up anything it cannot digest.

Perhaps donating it to some worthy family who may be needing some extra food. This might help them. That would be much better than going to the dogs (the dogs won't appreciate it as much as the stuff they drag in from the outside... LOL...).
I've got half-a-mind (LOL...) to go out and do some deer hunting myself, just to donate it to some people who might need it...
It’s funny how we treat these creatures like oddly formed humans. They are only capable of living with us, they are in no way like us.
