LANSING , Mich., A Michigan lawmaker is requesting a hearing for a bill that would give the state an official tartan, or Scottish-inspired plaid pattern.
State Rep. Richard LeBlanc, D-Westland, who introduced an identical tartan bill that failed to gain steam in 2007, said he supports a tartan made by Scottish weaver Kati Meek, 69, of Alpena, Mich., the Detroit Free Press reported Monday.
Meek said the tartan includes colors representative of Michigan's forests, lakes, beaches , cherries and snow.
"I used Michigan's natural colors. There's some pretty gross tartans, and this I think is one of the more attractive ones, if I may say so," she said.
More than 30 states already have official tartans.
Maybe that could be the new State Seal?
Do the voters of Michigan know about this?
In the midst of all the probelms Michigan has, you have an electred official wanting to address an official state skirt?
I wish the “great” citizens of Michigan would help pull the heads out of the a$$es of the rest of the voting citizenry up there and start electing adults.
Our economy is in the tank, people are leaving the state, you guys can’t EVEN balance a budget and you are messing with a kilt? Get a life dude. Vote this idiot out.
Can they weave in a dollar sign with a line through it?

Just imagine Detroit with everyone wearing kilts!
I’d rather see the pipes (and I don’t mean the glass kind) made the state musical instrument.

This is an ultra-low-volume ping list (typically weeks to months between pings, for matters related to Highland bagpipes and Scotland).

30 states have tartans? I did not know that. No offense, but why?
That’s silly. Many Michiganders have their own family tartans why create a state one? (the blue & black ones in the photo are one of my husband’s family tartans)
Because they can. The U.S. had one commissioned for the Bicentennial (red, white & blue, of course) -- but it had to be registered under a different name, the St. Andrew's. Each of the Canadian provinces has its tartan as well.
Though I am not aware of a big Scots influence in MI history. (There could be, but I am unaware of it.)
We have escapism tv, is this escapism legislation?! With all the troubles in Michigan, let’s focus on a Tartan?!
If you are a Dem in state of Michigan and can’t or won’t do anything about near 30% unemployment, I guess that is what you might do....:(
What a wonderful gift to his next election challenger’s campaign commercial tho!
No one mentioned anything about a kilt. Tartan is a cloth woven to represent a people or an area. The proposed Michigan tartan was woven specifically to represent the natural beauty of Michigan for ALL if its residents to claim and enjoy. It excludes no one and it costs nothing. Does everything in life have to be rosie for a non-controversial piece of legislation to be passed? What was going on when the mastodon bone became the official fossil of Michigan? I think if we can have an official State fossil and 36 other states can have an official state tartan, Michigan can have one too...for ALL if its people.
