the misnamed APMPHTRACK pictured near the bottom is wrong. this is an LVT(A)-1 which was built after tarawa when the need for light armor in direct support of troop carrying LVTs was needed. (LVT = Landing Tracked Vehicle). it and its cousins, the LVT(A)-4 and LVT(A)-5 were also referred to as AMTANKS.
at tarawa there were LVT-1 and LVT-2 AMTRACS which were lightly armored (by field modifications and not from the factory). they were not designed to be assault vehicles. they were troop and cargo carriers but did not have a rear ramp so marines and soldiers had to climb over the sides to get out. this was changed in the LVT-4 in 1944.
i am building/have built and LVT-(A)-1, 3, 4 (A)-4.
