Need help in repairing my broken laptop power cord. I have tried many techniques to figure out how to open up the adapter box. The plastic is too weak to crack open w/ just a screwdriver. It just scratched with pressure, while the seam remained firmly bonded.
Any advice on how to open the adopter box without throwing the adapter to Obama's face? BTW, I have an HP laptop. A new one at Best Buy costs $139.00.
get an aftermarket power cord for a lot less than HP. A co worker just went through this this week.
Where is the cord broken? Is the ‘adapter box’ a transformer?

That is an expensive cord. The one I use might cost $50 or so. My answer is to use ebay, you can find them for less.

I remember looking for a new one and being floored by the price - for my machine it was about $90. I went home, searched Ebay and got one for $25 with free shipping. If you can deal with being without the laptop for a while, it’s one alternative.
just buy an aftermarket at like Walmart for about $80 bucks. That’s what I did when my HP laptop cord went bad (after 5 years of use.)

Ebay is the place to go you might check craigslist also.

Don’t open it. There’s nothing you can fix in there and you might get hurt.
If it is a broken wire just as it comes out of the power supply, make a “splint” out of plastic or wood and tape it up to keep it straight. I fixed one that way.
ebay look for Rocketfish, it has different tips that cover a lot of different laptops.
I could have gotten me one for $25 with shipping through ebay but my PayPal doesn’t work for me. I am not going to link it to any bank account.
Make a careful note of the specs on your adapter. Go to a second hand store like Goodwill or Salvation Army and rummage around for a replacement for $5 or so.
All of the above advice, but it seems that no one mentioned
radio shack they have power cords with transformers with an
adjusting voltage and amps. These guys will get your notebook
powered up in the store or no sale.
1) You could go to Radio Shack and get a universal adapter and buy the correct connector.
2) Use a Dremel with a cut off wheel and go around the edge. Be careful as the wheel can shatter (wear safety glasses at least) or it can slip and cut you bad. Even if you fix the problem you still have to put the case back together and black electrical tape will do the job but look like crap.
I recommend option #1.
