In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
littoral \LIT-uh-rul\ adjective
of, relating to, or situated or growing on or near a shore especially of the sea
Example sentence:
The report shows dramatic improvement in the condition of the state's littoral waters since the cleanup effort began.
Did you know?
You're most likely to encounter "littoral" in contexts relating to the military and marine sciences. A "littoral combat ship" is a fast and easily maneuverable combat ship built for use in coastal waters. And in marine ecology, the "littoral zone" is a coastal zone characterized by abundant dissolved oxygen, sunlight, nutrients, and generally high wave energies and water motion. Most of us, however, are more likely to encounter the noun "littoral," which refers to a coastal region (and more technically, to the shore zone between the high tide and low tide points). Although the adjective is older -- dating from the mid 17th century -- the noun, which dates from the early 19th century, is more common. "Littoral" comes to English from Latin "litoralis," itself from "litor-" or "litus," meaning "seashore."
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Outstanding verse! I won’t try to compete because yours is perfect.
After Hurricane Ike blew through the area, the Galveston Bay had a literal littoral cleanup!

The new Navy Littoral Combat Ship. Looks to me like something out of science fiction.
Andrew Jackson Higgins, owner of the Higgins Boat Company bought up millions of board-feet of prime mahogany from pre-war Philippine, Costa Rican, and African sources. During WWII, Higgins Boat company was New Orleans’ largest employer and built landing craft and PT boats. Higgins Boat was non-union and paid whites and blacks the same wages, unheard of in the 1940s.
General Eisenhower said of Higgins, “He won the War for us.”
Sounds like a HERO. And he sounds like somebody algore and his ilk would hate and vilify.
This is one of those words that doesn’t mean anything like what you’d think it meant. I love a littoral site for vacations and am craving one right about now.
I read Jaws when we were on Cape Cod for the summer. I was scared because we were so close to the beach, but my parents said not to take the book littorally.
Higgins is still venerated as a hero in New Orleans. There are streets named after him. The former site of Higgins Boat is now Avondale Shipyards.
Exit question: Will Obama even leave President Palin a country to govern?
if he is hinting that he’s ok with just one term, it must be because he knows we will be down the shoot by then....
and did you SEE miss lindsay spank eric holder? i was floored at how forceful she can be!

With all the evil and sickness that runs rampant in this world, this is a picture of lightness which is good.
