It took the entire Live Science staff to research this one.

I think this just reflects who chooses to live in a coed dorm, not a causative relationship.

I went to a same-gender dorm, but most now aren’t. Granted, I went to a small Christian college.
I can’t imagine the stuff that went on at the coed dorms considering the stuff that went on at our dorm, including women.

Hmm... maybe I shouldn’t have been so adamant about renting a house.

causation/correlation.
there are tons of things that could influence these findings. did they control for anything or just give out a bunch of surveys?

(yes, as a matter of fact, i DID only read the excerpt)
To: decimon
wow i just checked the link. they surveyed 500 students. if 10% are in same-sex dorms, then that means they talked to 50 students from same-sex dorms.
i think we can throw this study out.

Why else would these dorms be co-ed?

The Army’s switch to coed “dorms”
(rather than all-male or all-female barracks)
has fueled the same “toxic” and highly “combustible” situation, in which countless male and female soldiers end up severely “poisoned” or “burned.”
The Army implemented this ridiulous policy at the same time universities that had switched to coed dorms were reporting skyrocketing rates of substance abuse, sexual assault and rape.
Surprise, surprise: the same damn thing happened in the Army after they followed suit.

So we should put college students into some kind of sex-separated housing. Let them live with their fraters and their sorors. That will certainly cut down on drinking, sex, and pornography.
To: decimon
pornography use was higher among students in coed dorms. Got the real thing in the next room, so they're looking at pictures. Sheesh.

“No Surprise: Coed Dorms Fuel Sex and Drinking”
I think that should be “Coed Dorms Fuel Drinking and Sex” just to acknowledge the usual order of things. ;-)

Yeah, but the rate of property destruction is much lower overall.
That’s the REAL reason that colleges started co-ed dorms—the boys were trashing theirs, and they tend to modulate their behavior somewhat when around girls.
I’ve never believed the touchy-feely supposed motivations behind making dorms co-ed. Follow the $$$$$, baby. Fewer repair bills.

People drink? In college? And have sex?
The horror.
I'm quite sure that I didn't do enough of either, and if I had known how useless a GPA is in the real world, I have endeavored to do more of both.
