No Surprise: Coed Dorms Fuel Sex and Drinking

It's no secret to students that coed dorms are more fun than same-sex dorms. But they can also fuel very unhealthy behavior that might otherwise be moderated.

A new study finds university students in coed housing are 2.5 times more likely to binge drink every week. And no surprise, they're also likely to have more sexual partners, the study found. Also, pornography use was higher among students in coed dorms.

Some 90 percent of U.S. college dorms are now coed.

Bingo. Men down thru history have usually behaved about as badly as women let them get away with.

So we should put college students into some kind of sex-separated housing. Let them live with their fraters and their sorors. That will certainly cut down on drinking, sex, and pornography.

Got the real thing in the next room, so they're looking at pictures. Sheesh.

At the University of Phoenix. And then at Phoenix House. You won't get any action at either but it is easy to sign up.

“No Surprise: Coed Dorms Fuel Sex and Drinking”

I think that should be “Coed Dorms Fuel Drinking and Sex” just to acknowledge the usual order of things. ;-)

Yeah, but the rate of property destruction is much lower overall.

That’s the REAL reason that colleges started co-ed dorms—the boys were trashing theirs, and they tend to modulate their behavior somewhat when around girls.

I’ve never believed the touchy-feely supposed motivations behind making dorms co-ed. Follow the $$$$$, baby. Fewer repair bills.

"...Bingo. Men down thru history have usually behaved about as badly as women let them get away with...."

I agree, and when viewed from that angle, it becomes apparent that women wield the mantle of our ociety and culture, not men.

Liberals get their panties in a wad about the "Male Dominated Society", but in reality it was women who had the ultimate veto, and I think life was a lot better back then. Men tried to please women and altered their caveman-like behavior accordingly, and this had a profound moderating effect on society.

Now, it's a travesty, because men have no impetus to please women, and that's a shame.

People drink? In college? And have sex?

The horror.

I'm quite sure that I didn't do enough of either, and if I had known how useless a GPA is in the real world, I have endeavored to do more of both.

That would be more reason to believe the university structure is outdated. If people had to get both their education and their jollies on their own dime then neither would be treated as frivolously.

Hard to imagine who ever thought co-ed dorms would be a good idea.

It's almost as if they came about with the intent to undermine society.

Or perhaps the people who allowed it at the start were simply stupid.

Pah. Being young fuels sex and drinking: It’s God’s plan for continuing the species. Co-ed dorms fuel busybody studies.

But in today’s social climate if the women are in same sex dorms, they may choose to be lesbians-until-graduation.

Pah. Being young fuels sex and drinking...

The rub is that tax money funds this fuel.

Lived in a co-ed dorm my freshman year. We had a dry campus, so I don’t think it was fueling a lot of drinking. As far as the sex goes, I guess. It didn’t slow down for most people when they moved into houses and apartments the next year.
