Logic appears sound. I didn’t check your computation skills though.

Oh, good. Either I can still do algebra or both of us are wrong the same way.

Wait.

Did we just get sucked into doing someone’s homework for them?

Let A be the price of a pound of apples.
Let B be the price of a pound of sweet potatoes.
Let C be the price of a pound of onions.

Since 6 pounds of apples costs the same as 9 pounds of sweet potatoes:
6A=9B

Since a pound of sweet potatoes costs twice what a pound of onions cost:
B=2C

We can substitute B=2C into 6A=9B and get:
6A=9(2C)
which is
6A=18C
or
A=3C

We also know a pound of apples costs 24 cents more than a pound of onions:
A=24+C

But since we know A=3C, we know
3C=24+C
or
2C=24
or
C=12

So since A=24+C,
A=36

And since we know B=2C (look up a bit), we know
B=24

This is the simplest way I can see it.

x = Sweet Potatoes
y = Apples
z = Onions

9x = 6y Laymen’s terms: 9 lb. Sweet Potatoes = 6 lb. Apples)
1x = 2z Laymen’s terms: 1 lb. Sweet Potatoes = 2 (1 lb. Onions)
1y = $0.24z Laymen’s terms: 1 lb. Apples = $0.24 (1lb. Onions)

First write out the equations.

Unknowns:
1 Cost of sweet potatoes (SP)
2 Cost of apples (A)
3 Cost of onions (O)

Equations:
1 9 lbs SP * $SP/lb = 6 lbs A * $A/lb
2 1 lb SP = 2 * 1lb Onions * $O/lb
3 lb A * $A/lb = $0.24 + 1 lb Onions *$0/lb

Nine pounds of Sweet Potatoes cost the same as Six pounds of Apples. One pound of Sweet Potatoes cost twice as much as one pound of Onions. While a pound of Apples costs 24 cents more than a pound of Onions.

It's three variables so you need three equations, which is what you are given.

9S = 6 A
1S = 2O
1A = 1O + 24

Then you substitute. Do it the easy way. Probably the easiest way to do it is:

Take the third equation where 1A = 1O + 24 and substitute the left hand side for A in the first equation. Now you have:

9S = 6(1O + 24) OR 9S = 6O + 144
which solves to s = (6O + 144)/9 or S = 2/3O + 16

Now take that and solve the second equation: 2/3O + 16 = 2O is the same as 1 1/3 O = 16 or O = 12

Now you have one answer. Plug it in to the S = 2/3O + 16 and you get S = 24

And plug into the third equation: 1A = 1 O +24 or A = 36

Please let me know if I can clarify any of these steps for you... Then

Is there any FReeper Math whizzes that can help us?

Once that's solved, perhaps there is some FReeper English whizzes that can step in.

See if this works:

Onions = N
Apples = A
Potatoes = P

Given:
A = N + 0.24
6A = 9P
P = 2N

Simplify:
6A = 9P
A = (9/6)P = (3/2)P

P = 2N
N = (1/2)P

A=A therefore
N + 0.24 = (3/2)P

N = (1/2)P therefore
(1/2)P + 0.24 = (3/2)P
0.24 = (3/2)P - (1/2)P
0.24 = P((3/2)-(1/2))
0.24 = P(1)
P = 0.24

N = (1/2)P
N = (1/2)(0.24)
N = 0.12

A = (3/2)P
A = (3/2)(0.24)
A = 0.36

(N) Onions = $0.12/lb
(A) Apples = $0.36/lb
(P) Potatoes = $0.24/lb
