This week Missoula area listeners of KMPT-AM radio, 930 AM, tuned in to hear something surprising.

Instead of the usual progressive talk on the station, they're broadcasting conservative talk. KMPT's format change began Tuesday, but market manager Scott Lindahl said they made the decision to switch months ago.
Lindahl said the station under-performed in a progressive format, and they had to either "turn it off," sell it or change formats. The station considered changing to an all-sports format, but after looking at ratings from independent survey company Eastlan, they found conservative radio to be one of the top performers in ratings and revenue in the Missoula area.
Lindahl said corporate members at GapWest Broadcasting gave the station input, but local programmers ultimately made the decision to go conservative. The station says they've answered several calls from progressive listeners.
"Did they like it? No." said Lindahl. "Did they understand it? Yes."
KMPT will continue to carry their regular sports programming, including Missoula Osprey baseball and high school sports coverage.
A Boo Hoo letter to the editor:
(snip)I feel as if there is a death in the family. As I drove to work this morning, I turned on my favorite morning program, Stephanie Miller. Only she wasn’t on. Instead, it was Michael Gallagher spewing his hate-filled dreg.

Maybe they’ll listen for a few days without realizing the change, and actually get themselves educated a little.
This has happened in several places, such as Columbus OH and also Providence RI (”the progressive talk experiment is over”, said the program director of that city’s WHJJ. They have been running Rush, Beck, Hannity, etc.) Prog talk was such a flop in liberal Boston that was off from 12/06 till Feb of this past year, when someone had to PAY to put it on (buying time on a so-so AM station on the right side of the dial). It’s not showing in the ratings. Don’t know if it’s making money, but if it can’t be a huge success in Boston...
Let me guess. MT gets some wealthy libs who live there in the summer. The locals do not believe in liberalism and were angry at Hollyweird for digusting crap like BrokeBack Mountain.
They should have recorded a couple of the AA shows for replay. Nothing changes but the names.
Is there no other kind of programming other than conservative talk that Gap West broadcasting can fill their time with? So sad.
