My wife and I are going to get a Blu-Ray player and I was looking for suggestions on a good (medium priced) player with Netflix streaming capability.

Agreed! The video quality is phenomenal, and the movie controls are very much user friendly. In fact, you can even get yourself a DVD remote to control the PS3.
+10000 for the PS3. I just got the netfilx DVD last night, works great. lots of movies to choose from and the picture for streaming is really pretty good, not BluRay of coarse but very good still. Bluray is awesome, plus you can network it to your PC and play other Videos, Pics, Songs etc from your main PC straight to your PS3, oh and it plays games too :)
No, your audio receiver. You connect your ps3 to your HDMI audio receiver and your audio receiver to the HDMI input on your tv. This way your ps3 will decode every audio format available, if you don’t have great sound with your hi-def tv you’re missing a lot. Sound is great even without using HDMI using optical out, etc. If you don’t want to buy a new audio receiver you can still get excellent surround sound. Make sure to not waste money on high priced HDMI cables, Amazon has them for 5-10 bucks, you can also go to monoprice.com for HDMI and other cables, Monster products are a scam.

also forgot you can get the cheap on with a small HD and just replace the HD with 500GB for less then 80 bucks to store pics, movies, etc on it...
I got the Sony Blue Ray Home Theater in a Box system.
It interfaced with my Sony LCD flaylessly.
It upscales. It recieves FM. BD Live works. It plays CDs for music.
The remote controls from the TV turn it on.
If you need speakers it it a good way to go.
What amp, TV, speaker system and room usage are we talking about this interfacing with?
When we got HD I was amazed at how much better the picture is. I am still blown away when we are watching things like football games and travel channel stuff. The colors, the depth of the picture are just amazing.
Just tv speakers for now. Small room.
I don’t use netflix for streaming. The ps3 delivers an incredible picture, downloading hi-def content the quality always takes a hit, it kind of defeats the purpose of having a blu-ray player, I’m a stickler for quality. The ps3 also updates it’s firmware often over the internet so I would choose it over cheaper players that don’t connect to the internet. PS3 also has FREE online connectivity to play and buy games with others over the internet. The ps3 can do a LOT of things, it’s an entertainment beast.
I feed my ps3 blu-ray discs. If you want to stream other content then I guess it’s OK. If you have a blockbuster with lots of blu-rays you can get the monthly deal where you can watch tons of blu-rays for cheap as well as using netflix to get blu-ray discs sent to you.

A lot of retailers(like Walmart,Fry’s)offer bundle deals(PS3 + blue ray movies/games)on or around Black Friday(11/27). This year may be the exception however due to retailers trying to jump the gun with early “Black Friday” like sales. Dell occasionally(with % off coupon code)offers pretty good deals on the PS3 also.
I’ve had a PS3 for quite some time and in years past would have recommended it as a Blu-Ray player, but today there are numerous cheaper alternatives that will suite your needs.
For the first couple of years of its life, the Blu-Ray format was going through numerous upgrades. Version 1.5 included the ability to play java script menus, version 2 included BD-Live (internet connection) support. Consequently, a lot of older players could not play discs at the time (the Pirates movies were big offenders), and the PS3 was the only option for an always up-to-date player. however, those days are long gone and almost every player on the market is BD 2.1 compliant.
Costco and Walmart carry a number of mid-ranged priced ($149-229) players that also stream Netflix and Youtube (LG, Samsung, Vizio, and Panasonic). There’s really no real reason to spend the extra $150 or so for a PS3 unless you want to play games.

WWBob, we are getting the PS3 for Christmas this year. It is the ONLY thing we are affording our family save a few stocking stuffers. I am not sure what an HDMI is. Can you elaborate please? Already have digital cable and HDTV.
HDMI is the name of the cable that you’re connecting to the TV. You can also hook it up via component cables (red, blue, green) for HD. You can get HDMI cables cheap, around 5 bucks.
What’s on the back of your tv for connections? Is it a High Def TV?
as the previous poster mentioned, HDMI is a type of cable connection.
in fact it is a way of cable connection at a high standard for two way communication between the devices at high transmission rates where all video and audio go across one cable.
Blue Ray will output 1080p video. If your HDTV is 720 or 1080i (the two standards right below 1080p) it will still look good, but a HDMI cable, albeit pricey, is the best connection assuming your TV has a HDMI input.
Some blue ray players have the amp built into them for audio, FM. etc. and others require an amp.
be sure you know what you are buying and how it will work with your exact TV prior to purchase.
you could take you TV manual to the store with you to show a good tech if you aren’t buying off the internet.
