Book To Read

Posted on 11/12/2009 7:55:30 PM PST by Allen In Texas Hill Country

I have 3 weeks of air and ship time starting in a few days and need a good book to read. I'm trying to think of what I'd like to read but have been unable to come up with anything specific. I'm open to most/any suggestions.

Thanks

The Civil War by Shelby Foote.

Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson

The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William Shirer

The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

All good stuff. ;-)

The Illuminatus Trilogy

Really awesome classic, but so long and complex that it really needs to be read when you have a long stretch of time available. Which it sounds like you do.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Illuminatus!_Trilogy

http://www.amazon.com/Illuminatus-Trilogy-Pyramid-Golden-Leviathan/dp/0440539811/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1258088607&sr=8-1

Lengthy excerpts of it are available here: http://www.pauladaunt.com/books/Illuminatus/Wilson,%20Robert%20Anton%20&%20Shea,%20Robert%20-%20The%20Illuminatus!%20Tril.html#_RWTOC-16

Definitely concur on Atlas Shrugged, Unintended Consequences, and Shattered Sword. If you like hardboiled detectives, Library of America's 2-volume set of Raymond Chandler's collected works (including short stories, novels, and screenplays) is a favorite to which I keep returning; the writing sizzles! If you are looking for something a tad lighter, try The Collected Works of Saki (HH Munro) - very British, very funny! PG Wodehouse is a great beach read (try "Leave It To Smith" and "The Heart Of A Goof" for starters)

These are just general reading suggestions, since I don't know where you are going and for what purpose; if you are venturing near Italy, try "THe Memoirs of Benvenuto Cellini", a landmark in the rise of human letters which details the life, work, and adventures of a true Renaissance man (and contemporary of Michelangelo and DaVinci, among others)

"And finally I can define life to anyone that has the time to listen."

Read "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle

It would be an interesting exercise to see how your definition of life fits with was "Is."

For a great, long and exceptional novel you can’t beat Lonesome Dove. Incredible.

Printed the suggestions and came up with this list to take to the book store.

Ender’s Game & Speaker For The Dead

I’ll probably buy just one of the following 3 books.
Unintended Consequences
Term Limits
5000 Year Leap

Wild Swans
August 1914

And what in the h-— is a Kindle?:<))) I’ll find out.
