If you've only been half paying attention, you probably think that the Apple Tablet is a done deal.
It isn't. Outside the impervious hallways of One Infinite Loop, the tablet remains a technological unicorn -- a mythical beast whose beauty, elegance and singularity we can only imagine.
Wired.com is among the vast majority of publications which fervently believes, however. We have found supporting evidence in all manner of tea leaves, including the decision by Apple to allow iPhone developers to create free apps that can be platforms to charge for something.
This is probably just a way of porting the shareware model to mobile. But a free shop window would also be a perfect way for publishers, we argued, to offer readers the same chance to sample content.
Apple admits nothing, of course. In a recent meeting with media executives, including some from Wired's parent company, Condé Nast, attendees were required to sign a non-disclosure agreement, participants told Wired.com. Despite this precaution, the word "tablet" was never uttered -- indeed, hardware wasn't even discussed.

Thanks to LearnsFromMistakes for the heads up...
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
It looks like HTC might beat them to the punch. The CEO has been seen with a prototype several times recently. There was a rumor that is was an Apple preproduction model but that has been denied by several parties and ignored by Apple. It may in fact be an Android tablet. See engadget for discussion.
If Jobs retired today he’s still in the history books.
I have tried several different tablet PC’s, and all of them suffer from rather terrible user interfaces. I am convinced that Apple can get it right. Imagine the Iphone expanded to one of these machines. Right now, I see people struggling with netbooks, I really think Apple could be the first to bring out a truly usable tablet. And I say that as an Apple NON-fanboi.
I’m not looking forward to a tablet computer and I’m a Mac user. I don’t like fancy gestures on touch pads, either. I touch type and don’t like to worry about how my thumbs are touching a touch pad. At some point, these interfaces become like the “MacBook Wheel” joke for me.

Is there a FReeper Pool about the name it will carry??? My choice would be iRoc (roc = granite = tablet)
Many have defined the problem -- people are abandoning old media for new in droves -- but nobody has come remotely close to figuring out the formula to monetize this audience in a way that ensures the range and level of news and periodical content and offers the rich experience advertisers will pay a premium to be part of.
This was the part that made me go, "eeeeehhhhhh whut?" It sounds more like wishful thinking on the part of media than a legit article. That said, I think a tablet PC COULD become a very powerful commodity. A couple of things I was thinking about were for police and EMS personnel to fill out reports on scene, route and delivery drivers, and salesmen. I suppose an electronic subscription to the NY Times or "Ski quarterly" is a possibility, but my indications are that if people are willing to pay subscription prices, it's to get content WITHOUT advertising.
As far as saving the "media," news is a commodity, as is political opinion. Trying to sell news anymore is like trying to sell access to stock market quotes or nude photos. Why would ANYONE pay for something that's available for free all over the net?
iTab or iPad
I often miss my Gateway tablet that broke. My new laptop is a MacBook Pro. The tablet was cool.
Jobs has always been a step ahead of the market. There was iPod, iPhone, iPod Touch, Mac TV, and multiple iterations of the OS. Where is the logical progression? Where are the TV networks, cable and satellite companies going?
Look for Jobs to again be a step ahead.
Hint - check and see what Mark Cuban is investing in.
Anyone remember the Apple Newton? A tablet in early stages.
What a POS.
That's the vison that apple has and someday they'll put it on the shelf. MS has been chasing the MAC OS since 1984 and they'll keep chasing because apple has the ideas.
That’s one way to look at the product. The other way is to reognize that apple was out there ahead of most of the others and it looks like they qill continue to be.
And maybe some day I’ll discover spell check.
Nah! It's got to be.... iPad!
Thanks. I totally agree!
With a Mac, it's built in. . . Along with the system wide Dictionary, Thesaurus, and Encyclopedia.
