For a myriad of reasons, I have spent the last few months watching a movie most every weeknight. I have finally gotten my moneys worth from my Netflix account.
But, lately I have had trouble finding movies I think I will like. I scour Netflix and am having a hard time finding movies that interest me, though I know they are out there.
My interest runs from war movies to action flicks to quirky indy films to foreign art things.
Some of my favorite movies I have seen the past few months are Defiance, all of the Sean Connery Bond films, Sleeper, The Right Stuff, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Riding Giants, a Hard Days Night, and a few foreign artsy films whose names I dont recall.
By far my favorite movie I have seen lately is Everything is Illuminated.
I have no interest in horror flicks, romance movies, teen gross out flicks or most movies made in the 1960s.
Could anyone be so kind as to suggest a good movie or two?
Thanks
That’s my kind of list! :) Then there’s My Favorite Movie Released in 1939: “Bachelor Mother” with Ginger Rogers and David Niven.
Wow! Great minds think alike at exactly the same time! Eerie! Are we related?
I assume you have seen Unleashed with Jet Li, Bob Hoskins, and Morgan Freeman.
Speaking of Bob Hoskins, “The Long Good Friday” is also excellent.
Two others from the 1930s: “Ruggles of Red Gap” and “My Man Godfrey”.
I heartily second Brazil. In fact I’d put it a smidgeon ahead of Ice Pirates. It’s kind of a wry comic version of 1984, which in theory shouldn’t work, but it does. I love Robert DeNiro as the outlaw air conditioner repairman. He tweaks the government by fixing peoples’ A/C units in the dark of night before the incompetent government repairmen can get to them, and as a result he’s on the government’s Most Wanted list. I think Brazil won a couple of Oscars back in ‘87 or whenever it was that it was made.
Brazil was an excellent movie, one of the great sendups of liberal dystopia. But, for anyone who has not seen it, beware, it’s not all light, comedic fun; it’s got a mean streak that surfaces when you least expect it, and can be very disturbing.
The casting, the writing, the cinematography and the effects are first-rate, and have withstood the test of time. It does not appear dated at all. If this sounds like it suits anyones’ taste, go download it from Netflix or rent it. It’ll be enjoyable.
BTW, I was just scanning through on the comments tab and saw your reply about Brazil, and so I don’t know if anyone has mentioned Shawshank Redemption. That’s another I’d consider a great, even though I detest Tim Robbins’ politics. They’re thankfully not on full display in this one.
bump
It is OK, imo. A 6 or 7 out of 10. Not a favorite tho.
Yeah, I agree with your comments, and true about it not being all light comedic fun. It’s really a pretty dark movie.
The Warwoman watershed is one of my favorite areas. Great memories of fishing as a lad as well.
+1 on Pan’s Labyrinth. That Del Toro guy (the director) is a genius. His stuff is so creative and otherworldly. In fact all his movies that I’ve seen have been really good. Like the two Hellboy movies — both excellent.
TCM showing a Boris Karloff-athon Friday & Saturday....
If you’re in the NYC area, Channel 11 (WPIX) is showing a Chiller Theater (Complete with 6-fingered hand intro) on Saturday.
I’ve got to put Lives of Others on my to-do list. Several people on this thread have mentioned it. When that many freepers give something a thumbs up, it’s bound to be good.
Bump for netflix inspiration
Harry Tuttle: Bloody paperwork. Huh!
Sam Lowry: I suppose one has to expect a certain amount.
Harry Tuttle: Why? I came into this game for the action, the excitement. Go anywhere, travel light, get in, get out, wherever there's trouble, a man alone. Now they got the whole country sectioned off, you can't make a move without a form.
C’mon c’mon....we need to add “Dennis the Menace” (with Walter Matthau), “The Rocketeer”, and to re-iterate, because somebody else mentioned it already; “Frequency” with Dennis Quaid is great..
Three of my all time favorites.
That was going to be one of my suggestions.
Also, Shawshank Redemption, Gigot (Jackie Gleason), Dodsworth (a really good conservative-themed movie), Stalag 17.
Count me as one who found the “Shawshank Redemption” to be overrated.
Funny, never heard of this movie until this morning when I was flipping through channels and saw it was on, and now you mention it.
