For a myriad of reasons, I have spent the last few months watching a movie most every weeknight. I have finally gotten my moneys worth from my Netflix account.
But, lately I have had trouble finding movies I think I will like. I scour Netflix and am having a hard time finding movies that interest me, though I know they are out there.
My interest runs from war movies to action flicks to quirky indy films to foreign art things.
Some of my favorite movies I have seen the past few months are Defiance, all of the Sean Connery Bond films, Sleeper, The Right Stuff, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Riding Giants, a Hard Days Night, and a few foreign artsy films whose names I dont recall.
By far my favorite movie I have seen lately is Everything is Illuminated.
I have no interest in horror flicks, romance movies, teen gross out flicks or most movies made in the 1960s.
Could anyone be so kind as to suggest a good movie or two?
Thanks
Yes but as I said in a previous post I can't resist Buck Henry stuff so I didn't like it quite as much.
Don’t forget The Rat Race. Very funny.
The Defiant Ones
Excellent flick.
As one poster suggested Gran Torino, also have you seen the old John Wayne movie, “The Long Voyage Home”? it is a great movie, made in 1940 before the US was in the war but about the war none the less. It just came up on instant play. Also, if you like the old soap operas(and even if you don’t)think about trying out “Dark Shadows”. Start with the ones labeled, “The beggining” and work your way through. It was wildly popular and is still gripping in most of the episodes, eventually working up to Barnabas the Vampire. Just a suggestion.
There were definitely flaws in “Taken” but they didn’t occur to you while you were watching it. Afterwards you could spot but while watching it moved so quick and kept you so entertained you didn’t have time to think of them till later.
I loved “The Worlds Fastest Indian”, a great movie and based on fact.
Thanks for starting this thread, Skooz. It’s a lot of fun. Just in case you can’t tell from how many times I’ve posted on it I’m a movie nut.

Galaxy Quest was hilarious. A great movie and a show case for Tim Allen and Tony whats his name(Monk), not to mention a very hot looking Sigourny(spellling?) Weaver.
Thanks for the warning on Amelia. I’ll stay far away. I have to agree with you about Scarlet Johansen. She can’t act at all. She’s the female Keanu Reeves nice to look at but don’t expect any facial expressions from them during the movie.
This is a great thread, I’m a big movie buff.
Here is some stuff I haven’t seen listed so far:
WWII:
In Which We Serve - Story of a British destroyer from commissioning to sinking (told in flashbacks.)
The Guns of Navarone
Twelve O’Clock High
Command Decision
Battleground
The Sea Wolves (True story, set in India, of a bunch of elderly British veterans attacking NAZI ships in neutral Portuguese Goa.)
Napoleonic Wars:
Damn the Defiant!
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Horatio Hornblower (A&E series)
Captain Horatio Hormblower (movie with Gregory Peck and Virginia Mayo, Combined the two sets give you a good grounding in the Hornblower character.)
If you can find them, the BBC’s Sharpe series about Richard Sharpe is a great set of stories set during the Peninsular War in Spain and Portugal from 1807 to 1814.
# Episode Year
1 Sharpe’s Rifles 1993
2 Sharpe’s Eagle 1993
3 Sharpe’s Company 1994
4 Sharpe’s Enemy 1994
5 Sharpe’s Honour 1994
6 Sharpe’s Gold 1995
7 Sharpe’s Battle 1995
8 Sharpe’s Sword 1995
9 Sharpe’s Regiment 1996
10 Sharpe’s Siege 1996
11 Sharpe’s Mission 1996
12 Sharpe’s Revenge 1997
13 Sharpe’s Justice 1997
14 Sharpe’s Waterloo 1997
15 Sharpe’s Challenge 2006
16 Sharpe’s Peril 2008
For a funny one::: Adventures in Babysitting....
Haven't read to the bottom of this thread yet, but at this point I'll "third" that suggestion. One of my favorites from the past year or so (perhaps someone will also mention the Jason Bourne trilogy?). Shades of "Frantic", you know, the also Paris-themed movie starring that guy that sort of looks like Indiana Jones, and directed by that guy that sort of looks like that child rapist everyone's been talking about recently. (Sorry, good movie all the same...in an 80's kind of way (need I say 'Grace Jones'!?))
Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events - just for the musical score and the closing credits, if nothing else. Seriously.
I have a few Chinese movies in my collection. If you watched and liked “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” you will probably enjoy the following:
Hero - Jet Li stars in this story. The visual imagery in this film is stunning. The fight on the lake is my favorite.
The House of Flying Daggers - a captivating love triangle story.
Fearless - Another Jet Li film, more of an action film than the other two; the fight scenes are fights rather than fight choreography and scenery.
I also have a copy of Curse of the Golden Flower but thought it was just alright. See it if you particularly like the genre. The story is one of those ruling family struggle - King Lear-esk deals.
I prefer to skip the dubbed versions and read the subtitles because:
The dubbing is almost always poorly done.
There is usually even less information in the spoken translation than the subtitles, and
I like the sound of spoken Chinese
I also second the nomination of Das Boot. I have that in my collection also. Get the extended version and see it in German w/ the subtitles (same reasons as above). That is one amazing and tense film.
I must agree w/ you on “Taken”. I thought it was formula from start to finish. The addition of any thinking at all renders it only somewhat more plausible than “Transporter 2”. I had trouble w/ both of these. I’m capable of suspending disbelief, but not infinitely.
Another I have not seen listed yet - Cinderella Man w/ Russell Crowe and Paul Giamatti (pls excus spelin)
Watch it online.
