I am curious to know if Windows 7 is going to be one of those automatic downloads that us Vista Home Premium users are going to see in the near future?
Good heavens no. They’re gonna want money for it. You’ll probably be able to get it cheaper as an upgrade, but it won’t be free.
SeeSharp called it. It’s a separate operating system and will have to be purchased separately. The upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Win7 Home Premium is listed at $119.99 at Tigerdirect.com. That’s probably ballpark.
Automatic downloads?
I never set my computer to automatically download anything except for anti-virus definitions.
I’ve been running a pre-release of Win7-Ultimate for over a month and so far no problems at all. None!
If you defocus your eyes a little, Win7 is Vista SP3 -- it's an upgrade, there are plenty of differences, but it's a LOT like Vista, the way it should have been two years ago.
If you're having good luck with your Vista, you may like Win7 a lot, or may even find it superfluous since it's quite similar. If you hate Vista, you might like some aspects of Win7 (speedier, less of a PITA about prompts).
Overall I like Win7, I hated Vista and avoided it like the plague. I'm upgrading my XP boxes to Win7, skipping Vista. BTW, I'm not a Windows fanboy, actually a Unix-head who chooses Mac hardware and runs everything else in Virtual Machines.
Good luck!
I'm very fortunate to have MSDN and have been running Ultimate RTM for a while (after each of the RCs) and it really is pretty damn solid. If I had to buy it retail, I agree the Pro is the way to go. I'd probably skip Ultimate, since I don't need all the bells and whistles.
Being as our computer is not used for business or any strenuous tasks, is it important to get Pro?
We may well pull the trigger as soon as next week....been looking at those nifty "all in one" thingies, but we're also concerned about what happens if the monitor (which is the entire computer) dies a sudden death.
We don't know what the hell to do!
Thx...will check it out! Our current ‘old fart’ is taking a good 15 minutes to warm up before I can get on the internet, and we’ve got the angst thing going on....
Upgrades start at around $119.
New programs start at around $199.

Tigerdirect has some pricing info
"Pro" is what the operating system should be, and is equivalent to what you get STOCK with either OS-X or Linux, in terms of control and flexibility in things like networking, remote access, file sharing, user management, and a lot of useful utilities.
The "Home" version is intentionally brain-damaged by Microsoft into a state where it is incapable of proper networking and user management, is missing a lot of utilities, etc.
You can use the "Pro" version at home just fine, and will enjoy the added capability. Whereas you can't do squat with the "Home" version in an environment with more than one computer in it, other than ignore the other computer. (I'm exaggerating but only slightly.) The purpose of Home is to be cheaper, by eliminating functions.
Of course, if you've only got one computer, and will only ever have one computer, then the Home version will probably suit your needs.
Is it worth the money
“But it’ll be worth it. Great things have been said about Windows 7”
IIRC great things was said about Vista too, until it was revealed that it had more holes in it than XP did.
I’ll wait and see what people say about Win7 after it’s been out for a year before I shell out the money for it. Besides, by then it would be time for me to gut my computer and build again with a clean slate.
I’ve heard very good previews so far.
Hard for me to say since I didn't pay anything for it.
I guess it depends on what you want to do on your PC, and the problems you may be having with your current OS.
The Home editions is just a basic bare-bones edition. Trust me, you're better off getting the Professional.
Microsoft is famous though, for releasing a kick-ass OS after a crappy one. And the reviews of 7 is off da hook! I can't wait to upgrade to Windows 7. I have Vista which came on a new Gateway computer and I've had nothing but Blue Screens of Deaths.
$30 to upgrade if you have a .edu email address.
