The motion picture “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” premieres at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

Hmmm. 10/19/39 is a Thursday. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Frank Nugent reviews this film for the Friday entertainment page. You know, there is another high profile premier this week. That is "Babes In Arms," the Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland feature directed by Busby Berkeley.

The Netherlands Prepares

Vaals, the Netherlands, Ocgt 18 (AP) -- "Packed into the southeastern corner of the netherlands, just adross the Maas River bridge west of the Roermond and well behind the actual frontier, is a tremendous force of armed, blond giants. If war comes to this country, it will be their job to fight with their backs to the "water line" while engineers loose the shallow flood waters that will make an island of western Holland with its populous cities and the bulk of its army...

Most curious to see the Dutch referred to as "blond giants." Yes, today it's said that Dutch on average grow taller than any others, but that was not the case years ago.

I wonder how these "blond giants" will stand up against Hitler's airborn troops?

Jack Carson and H.V. Kaltenborn appear in uncredited bit parts.

I didn't see Jack Carson's name in the main credits link on today's movie review thread but Kaltenborn actually is credited as a cast member.
