I don’t think there is such a thing as an inexpensive AR.
This DPMS is one of the lower priced ones I’ve seen.

Ammo doesn’t seem to be that much of a problem right now, but in most cases is about 20 to 30 percent higher than a year ago.
You can get a cheaper Saiga .223 that will shoot less expensive steel case ammo.

We stopped by our local yesterday and my buddy there showed me what he called an "entry level" DPMS AR-15 carbine. It was ALL flat topped (NO sights!), and had a collapsible stock, but no forward assist. The retail on it was "about" $800 and some change. You can probably find a better deal on it somewhere else.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, we looked at Para's new folder, which had a "real" gas system and a trigger that had to be the lightest AR-15 trigger we've ever tried on a factory rifle!
But MHO (my humble opinion) is to stay away from inexpensive ARs. I know we're all on a budget (including ME!), but two individuals did me a huge favor by steering me away from cheap ARs and advising me to stay with Armalite, DPMS, and Bushmaster. I'm glad we simply saved and bought good equipment.

I have a Stag Arms. Not the most expensive out there, but dang, no complaints about quality. Just put an E.R. Shaw custom varmint upper on the lower. I swapped the Stag carrier ass’y and no probs. It shoots great. As far as ammo goes, I’ve shot about 500 rnds of Century M193, and it’s been very consitant. I can bang a gong @ 300m all day long with the stuff. You can get it now for about .35/rnd.
[two cents]
